Role overview
Homerton University Hospital is seeking an experienced Staff Nurse to join its Acute Care Unit (ACU) in London. This is a chance to work in one of the city’s top-performing hospitals within a lively, forward-thinking team focused on delivering excellent patient care.
The ACU is a 35-bed acute admissions ward receiving patients directly from the Emergency Department across several specialties, including orthopaedics as well as medical and surgical cases. The environment is busy and fast-moving, but it is backed by a highly supportive multidisciplinary team that offers training, education, and professional development.
The unit is committed to helping nurses grow in their careers and gain broader experience across different disciplines. It is a strong setting for nurses who want to strengthen their acute care practice, work independently, and deliver person-centred care.
Key duties
- Maintain accurate patient records to the required standard, covering admission, care planning, implementation, and evaluation through the EPR system.
- Provide consistently high-quality nursing care.
- Work with families and other significant people in the patient’s life, involving them in care planning and delivery where appropriate.
- Coordinate patient discharges, with support from the discharge planning team when needed.
- Handle clinical emergencies as required and remain current with CPR training.
- Use medical equipment safely and effectively, and oversee others in its use when appropriate.
- Monitor and interpret vital signs and act promptly when signs of deterioration are identified.
- Ensure personal practice, as well as junior staff practice, is grounded in evidence-based care.
- Maintain a personal portfolio and identify individual learning needs.
- Work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team to support effective teamwork.
- Support the sister/charge nurse in meeting ward and department objectives.
- Represent the nursing team and help ensure clinical decisions include appropriate nursing input.
- Support junior colleagues, contribute to their development, and take part in ward teaching programmes.
- Contribute to trust-wide quality initiatives such as Essence of Care and take on Link Nurse responsibilities.

The unit provides a supportive learning culture with opportunities for training, education, and ongoing development. Homerton Healthcare also emphasises inclusion, fair recruitment, and staff development, and the Trust is proud to have received an Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). It has also been recognised on the HSJ & Nursing Times Best Places to Work list.
