Job description

About the Role

One Stop, part of Tesco Group, is searching for a Shift Leader to join the team in a dynamic retail setting where days offer a variety of challenges. As Shift Leader, you'll take charge of operations during your shift, guiding the team to create a clean, well-stocked shop that consistently surpasses customer expectations. Your role will focus on enhancing in-store service quality by actively coaching colleagues and providing continuous feedback. You will directly influence improvements by proposing practical solutions based on your assessment of store performance, all while ensuring a safe shopping and working environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and inspire the team to deliver an outstanding and convenient shopping experience for the local community.
  • Open and close the store, taking responsibility during duty shifts to prioritise safety and customer satisfaction.
  • Act as the primary point of reference for colleagues in the Store Manager's absence regarding routine operational concerns.
  • Help organise seasonal, community, and charitable events to foster an inclusive and positive atmosphere.
  • Ensure the store is consistently tidy, clean, and attractive.
  • Prioritise product replenishment according to customer demand.
  • Oversee product displays and labelling to meet company standards.
  • Quickly address overcharging issues and implement preventive measures.
  • Efficiently manage queues to enhance the customer experience.
  • Schedule and coordinate colleague activities and breaks in line with trade patterns and daily priorities.
  • Develop expertise about the store's operations and coach colleagues to support practical improvements.
  • Follow health and safety protocols and ensure team compliance.
  • Communicate effectively with the team to keep everyone informed.
  • Contribute ideas to simplify operations and share these with the Store Manager.
  • Address and resolve customer and colleague queries; escalate as necessary to management.
  • Ensure adequate staff coverage, especially during unexpected absences.
  • Serve as a Keyholder, responding to alarm callouts to maintain store security.
  • Monitor and act on internal communications promptly and keep colleagues up to date.
  • Balance work between customer service and stock management areas.
  • Assist Store Manager with absence management, including conducting return-to-work interviews and reporting triggers in line with policy.
  • Foster connections with Area Manager and People Partner for support and escalation of relevant issues as needed.
  • If your store includes a Post Office Local branch, manage its daily operations. Note: Applicants must pass a Post Office financial and criminal background check. Failing these checks will lead to withdrawal of a job offer.

What You Need

  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Keen focus on customer service
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations
  • Confidence with technology
  • Effective time management

Why Join One Stop?

  • Flexible working arrangements to suit a variety of life circumstances—discuss your needs during the application process.
  • Access to a broad range of employee benefits unique to One Stop as an independent Tesco subsidiary (see full benefits on the company careers page).
  • Be part of community involvement initiatives, including charity partnerships, local support, and fundraising (e.g., over £10.4 million raised for good causes and 1.6 million meals donated to those in need through FareShare and Olio).
  • A diverse and inclusive environment, welcoming everyone and supported by six colleague networks. Reasonable adjustments are offered for interview and onboarding processes. As a Level 3 Disability Confident Leader, One Stop ensures accessibility and fair opportunity for all applicants.
