Role overview
This opportunity is being shared on behalf of a partner organization, which will handle all applications and the subsequent hiring steps. The hiring company is seeking a Senior Manager - Technical Program Management in Australia.
This is a high-impact leadership position within a rapidly expanding, globally distributed engineering organization. The role is responsible for creating and scaling the Technical Program Management function from the ground up, while shaping how complex cross-functional work is planned and delivered across Engineering, Product, and Design. You will act as both a strategic partner and an operational leader, building the systems, standards, and operating practices that help teams deliver consistently at scale. In addition, you will recruit and lead a small, high-performing TPM team and establish a strong benchmark for execution quality. The position calls for deep technical understanding, excellent organizational judgment, and comfort working through ambiguity while bringing clarity to complexity. It is well suited to an experienced leader who has previously built TPM capabilities and wants to define how a modern distributed software company runs its most important programs.
Key accountabilities
- Set up and expand the Technical Program Management function, including its operating model, standards, engagement approach, and long-term organizational design.
- Lead and coach a growing group of senior TPMs, clarify performance expectations, preserve quality, and ensure the role does not become limited to administrative tracking or status reporting.
- Create and own the cross-functional delivery model connecting Engineering, Product, Design, Customer Success, Support, GTM, and PMM, with clear ownership, dependencies, and escalation routes.
- Define and roll out the company-wide standard for managing projects in tools such as Linear, including structure, tagging, milestone rules, and program-level visibility.
- Drive dependency planning and launch preparedness for large initiatives that involve multiple teams and downstream business functions.
- Build visibility mechanisms at the program level so leadership can assess execution health without adding unnecessary operational burden to teams.
- Work closely with Engineering Managers and functional leaders to strengthen accountability and ensure TPMs support delivery systems rather than replacing team ownership.
Requirements
- At least 10 years of experience in Technical Program Management or a comparable delivery leadership role in fast-growing, distributed software environments.
- Demonstrated success in building, scaling, or reshaping a TPM function, including leadership of senior TPMs and establishment of organizational standards.
- Strong technical fluency with the ability to understand architecture, assess engineering trade-offs, and engage credibly with senior engineering stakeholders.
- Proven ability to design and run cross-functional delivery systems spanning engineering and customer-facing or go-to-market teams.
- Extensive hands-on experience with project management tools such as Linear or Jira, including the creation or enforcement of standards across multiple teams.
- A clear perspective on the distinction between TPM and PMO responsibilities, with the judgment to avoid overly administrative or hygiene-only operating models.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills, especially in asynchronous and globally distributed settings.
- High judgment, strong autonomy, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders without formal authority.
Perks and benefits
- Fully remote-first arrangement with the freedom to work from anywhere in the world.
- Co-working support or a WeWork membership to help enable effective remote collaboration.
- Equity participation through an ESOP, giving you a stake in the company’s long-term growth.
- Comprehensive health coverage, including full coverage for the employee and partial coverage for dependents.
- Yearly company off-sites in international locations for in-person collaboration and relationship-building.
- Flexible working culture centered on asynchronous communication and ownership of outcomes.
- Annual learning and development budget for courses, conferences, books, and other professional growth needs.
- Technology allowance to support your preferred work setup.
Application and hiring process
The application and next steps are managed by the partner company. Applications are reviewed through an AI-supported matching process designed to assess fit quickly, consistently, and fairly against the role’s core requirements. The system shortlists strong matches, and that shortlist is then passed directly to the hiring company. Final decisions and follow-up steps such as interviews or assessments are handled by the employer’s internal team.
