Role Summary
This senior-level position requires a Kafka solutions expert with over a decade of IT industry experience and extensive, hands-on expertise (5 to 8 years) in Apache Kafka administration for large-scale production systems. The candidate will be responsible for owning and managing critical multi-cluster Kafka platforms engineered for high throughput, minimal latency, and fault tolerance, spanning hybrid and cloud-native environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and manage Kafka platform architecture and take full ownership.
- Perform robust Kafka administration and operational duties with 5 to 8 years of practical experience.
- Formulate event-driven architecture strategies aligned with business goals.
- Lead DevOps initiatives including automation and platform engineering.
- Integrate Kafka solutions with cloud platforms and Kubernetes clusters.
- Implement monitoring, observability, and reliability engineering practices.
Mandatory Experience & Expertise
- A minimum of 10 years in IT experience focused on distributed systems, middleware, or platform engineering.
- At least 5 to 8 years managing Kafka in production environments.
- Hands-on experience with Kafka clusters featuring 10+ brokers, over 10,000 partitions, and data retention on the scale of terabytes to petabytes.
- Demonstrated skills in performance tuning and responding to incidents in high-throughput Kafka deployments.
- Profound understanding of Kafka internals, including Brokers, ZooKeeper & KRaft, Producers & Consumers, ISR mechanics, Partition leadership, Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, and Kafka Streams.
Technical Stack
- Messaging and Streaming: Core Apache Kafka, Confluent Platform, MirrorMaker 2, Cluster Linking, Kafka Connect ecosystem.
- Cloud and Infrastructure: Kubernetes production-grade deployments, AWS and/or Google Cloud Platform, Infrastructure-as-Code tools like Terraform and Ansible.
- DevOps and CI/CD: Familiarity with version control and pipeline tools such as GitHub/GitLab, JIRA, Argo CD.
- Scripting and Automation: Proficiency in Python and Shell scripting.
Ideal Candidate Attributes
- Experience managing Kafka as the platform owner rather than as a mere user.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues down to the JVM level of Kafka brokers.
- Strong foundation in distributed systems and reliability engineering.
- Skilled at translating throughput requirements into effective Kafka partitioning and replication strategies.
- Capable of articulating Kafka platform strategy clearly to senior executives and non-technical audiences.
