The role requires maintaining professionalism, effective problem-solving, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and strong teamwork. Team members live and work closely during their 24-hour shifts, relying on mutual cooperation to manage daily tasks, emergency responses, and public assistance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification in NFPA 1001 - Fire Fighter I and II from an accredited fire training program.
  • Completion of Ontario Fire Administration Inc. (OFAI) Candidate Testing Service Stages 1 and 2 as per the requirements.
  • Successful fulfillment of the Lifesaving Society's Canadian Swim to Survive Standard.
  • Possession of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent academic qualification.
  • Current valid Standard First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Valid unrestricted Ontario Class “D” driver’s licence with “Z” air brake endorsement; clean driving record with fewer than six demerit points (abstract required within 30 days of conditional offer).
  • Receipt of a satisfactory Police Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Screening, dated within 30 days prior to employment.
  • Proficiency in English communication, oral and written, under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a professional team environment.
  • A dedicated work ethic paired with a genuine commitment to community service.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education credentials.
  • NFPA Operations or Technician Level certifications in specialized programs such as rope rescue, confined space rescue, water/ice rescue, hazardous materials response, or related emergency services.
  • Relevant skills or experience in emergency-related fields such as dispatch, firefighting, paramedicine, police service, military, healthcare, social services, trades, or heavy equipment operations.
  • Multilingual abilities to facilitate communication.
  • Trade apprenticeship or formal trade certification.
  • Emergency Medical Responder certification.
  • Other specialized training, qualifications, or experience beneficial to emergency services.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community through volunteerism in social, civil, community initiatives, non-profit organizations, counseling, or crisis intervention.

Additional Notes and Recruitment Process

Applicants must hold all required certifications by the closing date of September 4, 2026, at 12:00 P.M. Applicants in progress of obtaining qualifications are not eligible. A swim test administered by the Oakville Fire Department is mandatory before offer consideration. Successful candidates must also complete the Firefighter Physical Aptitude Test (FPAT) and subsequent technical and behavioural assessments.

Applicants are responsible for any expenses related to certification, testing, travel, or medical evaluations during recruitment. Completion of OFAI testing does not guarantee advancement. Medical screening including vaccination proof for MMR, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Polio, and Hepatitis B is required prior to employment.

Please prepare a combined resume and cover letter submitted online prior to the deadline. Only complete applications will be reviewed, and only shortlisted candidates contacted.
