Role overview
A well-established national business in transport and warehousing is looking for a skilled Payroll Officer to join its team in Devonport, Tasmania. The role reports to the CFO and is responsible for running payroll end to end for a workforce spread across multiple sites.
This opportunity is suited to a payroll specialist who performs well in a busy operational setting and has hands-on experience dealing with complex awards and varied payroll conditions. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, enjoy solving problems, and be committed to delivering reliable payroll support to both staff and management.
Key responsibilities
- Run weekly payroll accurately and on schedule for multiple operational locations.
- Apply relevant awards, overtime rules, allowances, penalty rates, and shift patterns correctly.
- Maintain employee details, handle payroll corrections, process leave, and manage timesheets.
- Ensure payroll activities comply with STP, superannuation, PAYG, and Australian payroll laws.
- Handle queries related to pay from employees and supervisors.
- Prepare reconciliations, payroll reports, and variance reviews.
- Support payroll audits, compliance checks, and ongoing process enhancements.
- Oversee workers’ compensation matters from lodgement through to finalisation.
- Make sure workers’ compensation obligations and legal requirements are met.
- Keep claim files and supporting records accurate and up to date.
- Communicate with employees, medical professionals, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Protect confidentiality and maintain a high standard of data accuracy and integrity.
Candidate profile
To perform well in this position, you should ideally have at least 5 years of payroll experience in a high-volume environment. A strong understanding of Australian payroll compliance is important, along with proven exposure to interpreting detailed awards, preferably in transport, logistics, or warehousing.
You should also be comfortable using advanced payroll systems and Excel, demonstrate excellent attention to detail, stay organised under pressure, and take a proactive, solutions-driven approach. Strong communication and stakeholder-handling skills are essential. Experience with Freight2020 or a similar payroll platform will be viewed favourably.
