About the Role
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer a full-time position for a Laboratory Scientific Technician with expertise in molecular microbiology. The Microbiology Department processes over one million specimens annually, supported by nearly 100 staff members, and provides comprehensive services seven days a week across bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, parasitology, and molecular testing. The department also engages extensively in research in collaboration with Trust and university partners and employs advanced equipment including MALDI-ToF, GeneXpert, BioFire, Liaison, Qiagen and Kingfisher nucleic acid extraction platforms, ABI Quantstudio real-time PCR systems, and Oxford Nanopore DNA sequencers. This position is part of a national effort integrating metagenomic next-generation sequencing to enhance critical care diagnostics.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in research activities and development projects.
- Support diagnostic procedures and sequencing operations within the lab.
- Analyze data generated from laboratory and research activities.
- Participate actively in local and national scientific meetings.
- Monitor and maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test protocols and standards.
- Contribute to the development and validation of new molecular diagnostic assays.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- BSc (Hons) degree in a biological science related to clinical microbiology or similar fields.
- Experience working in a laboratory setting with proficiency in standard laboratory procedures.
- Competency or willingness to develop competency to work in a biosafety level 3 laboratory environment.
- Proficient in laboratory IT systems and common software applications including Microsoft Office.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail adhering strictly to SOPs and protocols.
- Effective communication abilities and ability to train colleagues as well as troubleshoot technical problems.
- Capability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to critically evaluate scientific data and log it accurately.
- Good decision-making skills in resolving laboratory issues and maintaining workload under tight deadlines.
- Planning skills for short- to long-term activities and resource management.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development including further training as necessary.
Preferred Criteria
- MSc degree focusing on clinical microbiology is advantageous.
- Knowledge of molecular microbiology techniques related to diagnostics or genetics.
- Experience with genetic data analysis and bioinformatics software tools.
- Interest in innovative molecular diagnostic and analytical technologies.
- Understanding of diagnostic assay performance metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility.
