Role overview
Trimble’s Field Systems team is looking for an Industrial Design Intern to help advance the product design process from early ideas through to functional prototypes. The position focuses on shaping both the look and the physical build of surveying and mapping equipment used in demanding field conditions. You will help connect digital concepts with tangible hardware in a practical, fast-moving environment.
What the internship involves
This opportunity gives you exposure to the full product development journey. You may work on concept sketches, 3D modelling, prototype coordination, and design decisions that affect rugged electronic housings and user-facing components. The work has impact across products used by professionals in civil engineering and natural resources.
Responsibilities
- Help create sketches, visual renderings, and 3D models that clearly present new design ideas.
- Contribute to the design of electronic housings and accessories intended for harsh, real-world use.
- Liaise with manufacturing teams and coordinate vendors involved in engineering and prototype production.
- Work with different functional teams to ensure industrial design aligns with technical needs, production limits, and marketing expectations.
- Take part in design reviews and assist with bringing industrial design thinking into multiple business areas.
Skills and experience expected
You should be studying Product Design, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar discipline. The role calls for confidence in CAD tools, especially Creo, along with strong attention to detail, a quality-focused approach, and a curious mindset. Clear verbal and written communication skills are important, as is the ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced setting.
Preferred background
Additional value will come from familiarity with New Product Introduction processes, experience writing assembly or test procedures for sub-assemblies, and awareness of current trends in rugged product design.
Internship benefits
- Paid 12-week internship.
- Dedicated buddy or mentor support.
- Opportunity to visit a test site and see construction technology in action.
- Two-week break over the Christmas and New Year period.
- Chance to work with a professional team.
- Social activities and events with fellow interns.
- Trimble-branded merchandise.
- Complimentary membership to the Trimble Social Club.
- Participation in a cohort of more than 20 interns.
Location and workplace details
The internship is based in Christchurch, New Zealand, at Trimble’s New Zealand headquarters near the Little River Link Cycleway. The office hosts more than 400 Trimble employees and includes free parking, secure covered bike storage, an onsite gym, showers, and an active social club. The role has a 0% travel requirement.
