Estimator - Civil and Rail Infrastructure

Role Overview

We are looking for a skilled Estimator to join our Civil Construction division at our Rockhampton office. This pivotal position requires preparing precise and commercially viable cost estimates while managing the entire tender process, from initial Go/No Go evaluations to final tender submissions.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare comprehensive cost estimates and pricing plans for civil and rail infrastructure projects.
• Interpret project drawings, specifications, and tender documents to determine scope of work.
• Analyze costs related to labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and overheads to formulate competitive pricing models.
• Develop bills of quantities, detailed cost breakdowns, and compile all necessary tender documentation.
• Lead the tender preparation, submission, and proposal processes.
• Identify and assess risks, constraints, and commercial factors affecting project estimates.
• Collaborate with engineering, project delivery, and commercial units to confirm scope and pricing assumptions.
• Solicit and evaluate quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
• Create cost estimates for rail-specific work, including corridor access, possessions, safeworking, and compliance requirements.
• Review all rail, safety, and regulatory aspects impacting cost and delivery.
• Assist in formulating construction methodologies and staging for precision in estimating.
• Maintain up-to-date estimating records, databases, and tender documentation.
• Support post-tender activities such as clarifications, negotiations, and seamless handover to delivery teams.
• Drive improvements in estimating tools, templates, and pricing strategies.
• Contribute to budget preparation and cost forecasting when necessary.
• Uphold strict adherence to workplace safety and occupational health standards.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• At least five years’ experience in estimating within civil construction, infrastructure, or rail sectors.
• In-depth knowledge of civil construction techniques, materials, and key cost drivers.
• Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
• Proven experience in generating detailed cost estimates, bills of quantities, and pricing proposals.
• Excellent analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
• Adept at identifying commercial risks and formulating mitigation plans.
• Experience in obtaining and analyzing subcontractor and supplier prices.
• Strong organizational skills with the capacity to handle multiple tenders simultaneously.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and cost estimating or management software.
• Understanding of construction staging, cost control, and project delivery methods.
• Capability to work effectively under pressure to meet stringent deadlines.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Formal qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or related field.
• Prior experience in rail infrastructure or rail construction estimating.
• Familiarity with specialized estimating or cost management applications.
