Position Overview
Empress Emergency Medical Services in New York, NY, is seeking a dedicated EMT-Basic to join their Operations Department. This role involves both emergency and scheduled patient transport, coordinated closely with supervisors and local emergency agencies. The EMT will deliver high-quality patient care and customer service, providing assistance in pre-hospital and hospital environments, including inter-facility transfers.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate, plan, administer, and assess patient care following established protocols and standards.
- Complete comprehensive and accurate documentation of patient care and emergency responses, including all required paperwork for Empress and New York State.
- Maintain all medical equipment, vehicles, supplies, and patient care logs as directed.
- Operate company vehicles and equipment safely, adhering to company policies and promoting a secure work environment.
- Punctuality and the ability to work varying shifts including possible overtime and mandatory coverage.
- Follow all company policies, attend required medical education, updates, and meetings.
- Adhere to uniform and equipment standards.
- Support public information and education efforts to promote the EMT services.
- Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting patients (up to 150 pounds solo, 300 pounds with assistance) and working in challenging environments.
- Use appropriate protective measures when dealing with communicable diseases and be prepared to handle difficult or violent situations.
- Additional duties as outlined in the employee manual.
Required Qualifications
- Current certified EMT-B by New York State and valid CPR certification, maintained at all times.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with a clean record that meets insurance guidelines.
- Successful completion of drug testing and background checks, including CPAT assessment.
- Probationary employment period of 180 days.
Work Environment
Work involves indoor and outdoor settings with potential exposure to hazards such as blood and bodily fluids, requiring use of respirators and coping with odors, temperature fluctuations, and noise. The role requires physical stamina, mobility, and the use of personal protective equipment.
Clinical Skills and Duties
- Conduct rapid and thorough patient assessments including history and physical exam.
- Prioritize patient care and perform BLS assessments.
- Effectively use airway management techniques, oxygen administration, CPR, and defibrillators.
- Manage spinal immobilization, traction, splinting, emergency childbirth, and patient triage.
- Understand and operate within the Incident Command System.
- Exhibit strong communication and crisis intervention skills.
Company Responsibilities
- Complete accurate documentation and daily vehicle and equipment checks.
- Restock medical and trauma supplies as needed.
- Properly use communication devices and maintain cleanliness in vehicles and stations.
Continuing Education
- Maintain EMT certification with required state courses.
- Keep current with BCLS certification.
- Participate in company-required in-service training and updates.
