About the organisation

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), known in te reo Māori as Te Amorangi Mātauranga Matua, is a small Crown agency with a significant national responsibility. It supports New Zealanders to gain the skills and knowledge needed for a thriving future, and invests more than $3 billion each year across the tertiary education and careers system. TEC is seeking one permanent Data Analyst to join its Wellington-based team.

About the team and role

This position sits within the Data/Development team and reports to the Data Development Team Lead. The team includes Data Analysts and Data Warehouse Developers at different stages of experience. TEC works with a broad and expanding set of data, supported by modern tools and technology. The role suits someone who can interpret business needs and turn them into practical data requirements that contribute to better outcomes for learners and tertiary education.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with business groups to gather requirements clearly, then work with the information and insight teams to deliver what is needed.
  • Advise on changes to TEC data products and processes and support implementation activities.
  • Create and maintain data models, standards, master data, reference data, metadata, and definitions.
  • Provide day-to-day help to business teams with data analysis and issue resolution.
  • Promote sound data management practices, including frameworks, metrics, and processes that are consistently applied across projects and enhancements.

What you will bring

TEC is looking for someone with solid data analysis experience who enjoys working in a collaborative environment. You should be able to translate business needs into data requirements and have hands-on experience with data modelling, design, analysis, and profiling. A good understanding of data management concepts such as master data, data quality, metadata, and data integration is important, along with technical capability in SQL, Python, or similar languages. Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms, especially Azure and Databricks, would be highly valued. The role also calls for a continuous-improvement mindset, experience working across multiple teams, strong written and verbal communication skills, strong organisation and attention to detail, and the ability to work cooperatively with others.

Growth and development

This role offers opportunities to build your skills within TEC. The Data/Development team includes pathways to Senior and Principal level roles, and there may also be wider internal opportunities across the organisation.

Benefits and workplace arrangements

  • Three additional TEC leave days each year.
  • Flexible working options, a wellness programme, and the option to purchase extra leave.
  • A supportive manager who is keen to make the most of your strengths.
  • Reduced health insurance premiums through the group scheme.
  • Strong focus on career development and internal progression.
  • Flexible working arrangements are supported, but team members are expected to be in the office at least three days per week to support collaboration.

Salary

The salary range for this position is NZD 90,956 to NZD 107,007 plus 3% KiwiSaver, depending on proven skills and experience.

Application process and conditions

Applications should be submitted with a tailored cover letter and CV. The closing date is 11:59pm on Wednesday 22 July 2026. Questions about the role can be directed to hr@tec.govt.nz.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in New Zealand and be able to maintain that right. If a visa is held, a copy must be uploaded with the application. Before any offer is confirmed, TEC will complete pre-employment checks, including criminal conviction history and reference checks at a minimum.

TEC is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to a workplace that values diversity and inclusion.
