Job description

Role Overview

The Naval Service functions as the State's main maritime agency responsible for meeting both contingent and active maritime defense needs. Currently, the Irish Defence Forces are seeking qualified chefs to join directly within the Naval Service. In this position, you will be an essential contributor to the ship's Logistics Team, preparing and serving nutritious meals that uphold morale and health, even in demanding environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage food preparation and delivery for the ship’s personnel, ensuring varied and nutritionally balanced meals.
  • Work collaboratively within a structured kitchen team to maintain hygiene, safety, and operational efficiency both at sea and onshore facilities.
  • Engage in menu development, oversee stock management, and plan provisions for missions of varying durations.
  • Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to junior and trainee chefs.
  • Take part in emergency response activities such as firefighting and damage control drills as part of broader ship crew duties.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Possess qualifications equivalent to FETAC Level 6 / QQI Level 6 or NTCB Level 6 in Culinary Arts, or their national equivalent.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 39, with proof of age required during selection.
  • Meet a minimum height requirement of 5ft 2in (157.48cm), verified in selection stages.
  • No visible tattoos above the collar permitted while serving; verification during selection may disqualify if criteria not met.
  • Meet work permit eligibility, requiring at least five years’ eligibility to reside in Ireland, with documentation proof necessary.
  • Successfully pass medical, physical, and security clearance assessments conducted during recruitment.

Base Location

The position is based at the Naval Base on Haulbowline Island, Cork.
