Overview
The Applied Sciences Laboratory at SRI International invites applications for multiple positions as Applied and Computational Scientists. These roles involve conducting advanced research and development primarily in areas such as the mathematics underlying generative AI models, reinforcement learning, and algorithm design. While candidates with expertise in one or more of these fields are preferred, a critical skill is the capacity to rapidly acquire knowledge in new and diverse research domains. These roles report to SRI's headquarters in Menlo Park, CA, with some flexibility for hybrid working arrangements. The targeted start dates are June, July, or August 2026.
The team engages in developing innovative algorithms for various compelling applications including supply chain networks, social network graphs, optimization challenges related to generative AI, material failure analysis, quantum algorithms, and biological systems. Their mission encompasses conducting and publishing research in premier venues and contributing to technology commercialization by securing patents and fostering start-up ventures.
Responsibilities
- Conceive and develop research concepts, and lead rigorous experimental validation efforts.
- Present research findings to both government and commercial stakeholders.
- Collaborate effectively with principal investigators and their teams across academic institutions, industrial entities, and national laboratories.
- Prepare thorough technical reports and author research publications.
- Compose proposals and proactively suggest research ideas aligned with funding opportunities.
- Design and implement novel algorithms, evaluating their performance compared to current leading methods.
- Upon obtaining successful program awards, transition into a principal investigator role.
- Participate in travel as needed for project meetings and conferences.
Qualifications
- Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering with a computational science focus, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- A proven track record of scholarly publications.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is mandatory.
- Expertise in designing algorithms related to artificial intelligence, scalable computational methods, and algorithm implementation.
- Hands-on experience coding novel algorithms in languages such as Python and C/C++, including familiarity with AI model training libraries.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.
- Availability to start employment in June, July, or August of 2026.
Compensation and Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $112,880 to $149,570, varying by factors including geographic location, market conditions, and internal equity. Candidates may also be eligible for SRI's Pay for Outstanding Performance and Performance Based Compensation programs. A comprehensive benefits package is provided.
