Descrição da vaga

About the opportunity

Oranga Tamariki is offering a new permanent role for people who want to grow their career while making a real difference for tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau. The position has been created to give frontline Social Work teams dependable operational assistance and to meet ongoing demand across sites. Unlike earlier fixed-term listings, this role is designed as a stable part of the organisation’s workforce.

About the role

Allied Support Workers operate with guidance from qualified Social Workers and supervisors. The role helps create better outcomes for children, young people, and families by allowing Social Workers to concentrate on statutory duties and professional practice.

This is a non-regulated position. It is not a social work training role and is not a para-social worker role. You will not carry a case load or perform social work functions.

The role supports Caregiver Recruitment and Support teams with recruitment activity, caregiver support, training coordination, placement assistance, and administrative work that contributes to positive outcomes for tamariki, rangatahi, and their caregivers.

Day-to-day work

  • Provide regional support according to operational priorities and service demand, which may require travel within the region and at times beyond it.
  • Assist with caregiver engagement, community outreach, and recruitment-related activity.
  • Help organise caregiver training and contribute to learning and development initiatives.
  • Support caregiver assessment, approval, support planning, and ongoing caregiver assistance.
  • Contribute to placement and matching processes through information collection, caregiver profile preparation, and placement coordination.
  • Build constructive relationships with caregivers, whānau, community groups, and internal colleagues.
  • Occasionally work outside standard business hours when required.

What you’ll bring

This is a high-trust, safety-critical children’s worker role. It calls for strong judgement, emotional resilience, and a consistently dependable approach.

  • Experience supporting people in community settings, especially those facing need or hardship.
  • Exposure to working with Māori and/or Pasifika communities.
  • Confidence handling emotional situations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Strong spoken, written, and interpersonal communication ability.
  • Capability to work collaboratively with peers and other stakeholders.
  • Comfort working with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to stay calm and effective in stressful or complex situations.
  • Knowledge of tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ culture, and an appreciation of cross-cultural practice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ability to apply it in practice.
  • Intermediate proficiency with the Microsoft Suite.

Qualifications and licence

  • A recognised qualification in social services is preferred.
  • A current full driver’s licence with a clean record is required, along with willingness to drive Ministry vehicles.
  • Historic convictions may be assessed individually.

What’s on offer

You’ll have the chance to use your skills to support the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi. The role offers a salary range starting at $68,371 and up to $75,501, along with meaningful training and professional development so you can continue to grow.

Oranga Tamariki values diversity and is committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace.

Application information

Applications close at 5:00pm on Tuesday, 21 July 2026.

Applicants should submit a CV and cover letter online. Current Oranga Tamariki employees should apply using their Oranga Tamariki email login.

Because the organisation is hiring for a large number of roles nationwide, the recruitment process may take longer than usual.

Candidates should review the organisation’s code of conduct before applying, as it outlines expectations for kaimahi and requires attendance at work free from the influence of drugs and alcohol.
