The opportunity
This fixed-term marketing and communications position runs until August 2027. It is a full-time role based in Wellington, with Christchurch or Auckland also possible for the right person.
Role overview
You will join the Communications Team in the Office of the Chief Executive, where the function is centralised to support marketing and communications work across Stats NZ. The role combines strategic and hands-on work, with a strong emphasis on internal and organisational communication.
In this role, you will provide audience-focused advice, support, and content for teams across the organisation. Much of the work will involve helping shape clear communication for different groups through stories, articles, newsletters, intranet updates, digital content, and communication plans linked to key priorities. The position will suit someone who enjoys writing, building productive working relationships, and helping people understand how their work connects to organisational direction.
What you will need to bring
The role calls for strong communication skills, a customer-focused approach, sound judgement, and close attention to detail. You should be comfortable working with stakeholders and subject matter experts, and able to turn complex ideas into clear, practical messages for different audiences. Experience in internal communications is preferred, though a strong interest and ability in that area will also be valued.
Relevant experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a similar field is expected, ideally backed by a tertiary qualification or equivalent knowledge. You should also be confident using common communication channels such as an intranet, website CMS, newsletters, or social media. Digital communication capability, including video skills, would be useful but is not required. Experience in a change environment would be an advantage, and a commitment to ongoing learning and cultural capability is important.
What Stats NZ values
Across all roles, Stats NZ looks for people who act with integrity, take responsibility, and do the right thing even when it is difficult. The organisation also values curiosity, a willingness to learn, respect for others, inclusive relationships, and collaborative working across teams and boundaries.
About Stats NZ
Stats NZ is New Zealand’s national statistics office, producing data and insights that support decisions across government, communities, and business. Its work contributes to understanding and improving outcomes for people, the economy, and the environment, while helping strengthen the wider data system and equitable access to high-quality information.
Benefits and working conditions
This role includes a 37.5-hour working week, 15 days of sick leave that can be used for yourself or people in your care, and 3 additional leave days taken during the end-of-year office closure. Other benefits include flu vaccinations, an Employee Assistance Programme, corporate discounts on a range of products and services, and opportunities for career growth.
The salary range is $77,259 to $90,893 pro rata, plus KiwiSaver.
Application and recruitment notes
Applications are reviewed as they are received, so the process may move quickly to interview stage. A phone or video pre-interview screen may be requested. The role may close before the advertised date depending on the volume of applications.
If you need any accommodations during the hiring process, you should mention this in your application. Questions can be directed to recruitment@stats.govt.nz.
You must have a valid work permit or visa to live and work in New Zealand. Background checks and other pre-employment checks are part of the recruitment process. Unsolicited CVs from recruitment agencies will not be accepted.
Who this role suits
This opportunity is a good fit for someone with transferable communication skills from any industry, including unpaid work, who is keen to grow and contribute in a collaborative public sector environment.
