About the Role
The University of British Columbia is seeking five dedicated Service Workers to join its mobile housekeeping unit within the Student Housing and Community Services department. This role involves performing cleaning and service duties as you move between residential buildings, ensuring cleanliness and safety throughout the campus housing facilities. Employment is ongoing with shifts that may include days, evenings, nights, and weekends.
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain and manage cleaning materials and equipment, maintaining sufficient stock and ensuring proper working condition.
- Perform a variety of cleaning tasks including dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, polishing, disinfecting, and scrubbing surfaces such as floors, walls, furniture, bathroom fixtures, and appliances.
- Remove old wax and polish coatings from floors and furniture, reapply wax or polish, and periodically shampoo carpets.
- Clean accessible interior and exterior windows and other glass surfaces.
- Rearrange and set up furniture and equipment as needed.
- Make beds, change linens, and handle distribution and collection of laundry.
- Collect and dispose of garbage and waste, including cleaning ashtrays and emptying waste receptacles.
- Clean building vents and drains, and service washrooms.
- Post and update signs on notice boards, doors, or other reachable surfaces as required.
- Sweep and clean sidewalks and adjacent areas and clear snow when necessary.
- Complete minor maintenance and repairs such as hanging pictures, oiling hinges and locks, changing light bulbs and fixtures, tightening screws, and unplugging toilets.
- Report maintenance needs or damages to buildings, fixtures, or furnishings promptly.
- Ensure buildings are secured by checking doors and windows and report any unusual security issues.
- Respond appropriately to guest requests and needs.
- Perform other related duties in line with job requirements and qualifications.
Qualifications
- Minimum completion of Grade 10 with at least one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Willingness to respect diverse viewpoints including those differing from one’s own.
- Demonstrated commitment to personal growth and knowledge related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Preferred background in institutional janitorial work or hotel housekeeping.
- Working knowledge of cleaning regulations, security, and safety procedures.
- Physical capability to perform duties involving extensive walking, climbing, and manual labor.
- Bondable with ability to follow detailed instructions and adapt to new procedures.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with others.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Availability to work weekends and possibly evenings.
Additional Information
This position falls within the CUPE 116 union with a monthly salary range of CAD 4138 to CAD 4357. The application deadline is July 20, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Supervision is provided by a Housekeeping Supervisor or Manager, with the possibility of overseeing less experienced staff.
