Role overview

This position focuses on improving and sustaining manufacturing processes for battery module production at Tesla’s Sparks, NV site. The engineer will shape production methods, refine flow through the factory, and solve manufacturing challenges by working closely with Design, Test, and Quality teams. The role also supports cost reduction, yield improvement, and the definition of process and material limits using data.

Key responsibilities

  • Build deep knowledge of the manufacturing process by studying critical data and the product in detail, then use Lean principles to refine line layouts, material movement, waste reduction, and ergonomics.
  • Improve safety, output, and equipment effectiveness while driving continuous improvement work that increases yield, capacity, and capability in a cost-conscious way.
  • Investigate part-process problems, trace issues back to their source, and apply structured methods such as DMAIC, Ishikawa, Five Whys, and 8D to eliminate root causes.
  • Create clear tools for data gathering, visualization, and analysis to support operational and financial decisions, including use of factory data systems and software such as MySQL, Python, R, JMP, Minitab, Tableau, and Ignition.
  • Support engineering and manufacturing activities such as 5S, Lean initiatives, material handling improvements, production line setup, and safety procedures.
  • Control process variation with SPC and MSA, audit processes against product requirements, and help develop and maintain FMEAs, Control Plans, and Engineering Change Orders.
  • Write and maintain manufacturing instructions, routings, and related process documents, while also coordinating process sustaining technicians and rework procedures.
  • Support 24/7 production coverage.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering, or comparable hands-on experience.
  • Practical knowledge of Statistical Process Control and how to apply it in manufacturing.
  • At least 4 years of experience improving processes in a high-volume, highly automated production environment.
  • Proven success in process development and OEE improvement initiatives.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting ability, with familiarity using DMAIC, Ishikawa, Five Whys, or 8D methods.
  • Experience using test equipment, control systems, and data acquisition tools/software.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working across manufacturing and engineering teams.
  • Creative, improvement-oriented mindset with a passion for building high-quality, reliable products.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and full-time employee benefits starting on day 1.
  • Medical coverage with plan options that include $0 payroll deduction.
  • Family-building, fertility, adoption, and surrogacy support.
