Heavy Equipment Operator I

Job Overview

This permanent, full-time role involves operating a range of heavy machinery for maintenance activities related to city streets, parks, and utility services within St. Louis, Missouri. Operators will handle vehicles including single and double axle dump trucks, boom trucks, loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, and snow plows, with some duties requiring readiness for 24-hour snow removal calls.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate various heavy equipment such as single and double axle trucks, loaders (rubber tired and skid steer), boom trucks, roll offs, street sweepers, trash trucks (rear and side loaders), and super suckers.
• Perform loading and unloading of materials and machinery.
• Use snow plows and salt spreaders to maintain roadways during winter conditions.
• Carry out soil compaction, field grading and leveling, and removal of asphalt and concrete.
• Conduct pre-trip vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure safe operation.
• Perform maintenance and upkeep on departmental vehicles and equipment.
• Occasionally undertake welding tasks and manual labor on maintenance projects.

Knowledge and Skills Required

• Ability to process and analyze data such as work orders and schedules.
• Competence in explaining procedures and adhering to established policies, along with following supervisor directions.
• Skilled in operating complex machinery requiring rapid and multiple adjustments, with capability to perform routine maintenance.
• Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Sound judgment and decision-making skills when adapting work methods based on varying project needs.
• Adaptability to work in diverse environmental conditions including exposure to dust, moisture, noise, and traffic hazards.

Qualifications and Licensing

• Minimum of one year experience operating heavy or specialized automotive equipment, or completion of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program, or equivalent training and experience.
• Must hold and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B); candidates with only a CDL permit at hire must obtain a full license to complete the probationary work period. Certain roles may require a Class A CDL within the test period.
• Proof of CDL training completion must be available upon request.
