Electrical Design Engineer - Substations (Doha)

About the Client

A prominent India-based engineering and project management firm with over 20 years of experience in the power and infrastructure sector seeks an Electrical Design Engineer for their Doha, Qatar operations.

Job Purpose

The Electrical Design Lead will oversee and execute comprehensive electrical engineering activities related to Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substations. Responsibilities span the entire project lifecycle from pre-bid engineering to commissioning support and warranty phases, while providing assistance to the onsite team. The role includes leading a team of design engineers and draughtsmen to ensure project engineering is delivered on schedule, within budget, and meets quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and validate design drawings prepared by engineers and draughtsmen, including verification of equipment sizing and electrical design calculations.
• Obtain necessary approvals from clients for engineering deliverables.
• Check design drawings and layouts such as equipment layouts, cable routing and tray layouts, earthing, lighting, lightning protection, cabling interfaces, schemes, wiring, SCADA, and control systems.
• Ensure all deliverables comply with project timelines.
• Review Bills of Quantities (BOQ), submit to contracts team, and provide required technical clarifications.

Candidate Profile

• Electrical Design Engineer with 6 to 10 years of specialized experience in substation design, particularly for international projects.
• Proficient in both primary and secondary engineering phases for substation projects, including detailed design aspects of GIS and AIS substations.
• Deep understanding of substation primary and secondary design elements such as earthing, lighting, lightning protection, cabling, and coordination with civil, MEP, and instrumentation teams.
• Experienced in secondary engineering tasks including schemes, wiring diagrams, SCADA, and control systems.
• Currently residing in Qatar and immediately available to join.
