Job Overview

At H&M, the Assistant Manager position is termed Department Manager. The role is centered on supporting sales and profit targets by strategizing to deliver an excellent customer experience throughout the department and the store. The Department Manager must ensure having a skilled team, foster their growth, handle succession and talent planning, and execute structured performance management aligned with company values and outcomes. Compliance with legal standards and H&M policies is mandatory to meet customer and colleague expectations.

Reporting Structure

This role reports to the Store Manager and supervises the Department Supervisor and Sales Advisor directly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Regularly review sales and profit key performance indicators (KPIs) for the department alongside Visual Merchandisers, implementing actions to maximize sales and ensuring appropriate staffing and scheduling for effective execution.
  • Collaborate with store management to ensure operations meet H&M standards, optimize scheduling within sales budget constraints to facilitate commercial events, store moves, and exemplary customer service.
  • Organize and prioritize team initiatives that influence sales positively and guarantee adherence to the Commercial Handbook.
  • Promote and maintain exceptional customer service standards through active coaching and exemplary leadership.
  • Participate actively in routine store operations including handling delivery trucks, garment processing, markdowns, department transitions, and pricing updates.
  • Implement loss prevention measures and uphold safety and security guidelines within the department.
  • Provide feedback to Store Manager and area teams regarding inventory allocation and replenishment based on sales trends and relay competitor-related risks or opportunities.
  • Manage recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and succession planning for the department team following H&M protocols.
  • Provide regular performance feedback, conduct development plans, and take necessary actions to enhance team performance.
  • Conduct clear communication about business performance, culture, and training priorities with the team via daily and weekly meetings.
  • Ensure adherence to health, safety, legal, and security standards protecting employees and customers.
  • Administer supervisory responsibilities complying with company policies and applicable laws, including time-off requests, pay, performance management, corrective actions, and employment decisions.
  • Maintain overall store accountability during Store Manager absence.
  • Promote a positive company culture by encouraging feedback and coaching the team accordingly.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Adept at multitasking in a fast-paced setting with strong attention to detail.
  • Possess at least 1-2 years of related experience (transferable experience acceptable).
  • Capability to lift weights over 20 pounds regularly.
  • Experience in coaching and counseling staff on management practices, including progressive discipline.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods, maneuver (bend, stretch, push, pull), and carry store items; proficiency in ladder and step stool use.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Basic computer literacy, including browser navigation, software use, and data entry.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for supporting other stores or training.
