Data Center Engineering Operations (DCEO)

About the Role

Amazon Web Services runs the infrastructure that keeps its cloud platform available around the clock. This team is responsible for the planning, delivery, operation, and reliability of AWS data centers and the supporting systems that power servers, storage, networking, cooling, and electrical equipment. The role is based in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and sits within a team that works across software, hardware, network, supply chain, security, and operations functions to maintain high standards of safety, security, capacity, and cost efficiency.

Operations and Maintenance

• Take end-to-end ownership of data center changes, incidents, events, and problems, including post-incident reviews, root cause analysis, and tracking corrective actions through closure.
• Plan and oversee maintenance and repairs for critical facility infrastructure so they are carried out in the business’s best interest.
• Handle asset control and inventory tracking.
• Create and keep current method statements, standard operating procedures, emergency response procedures, preventive maintenance plans, and technical records.
• Drive consistency through strong operating standards, technical documentation, and automation-oriented working methods.
• Build a thorough understanding of system design intent, operating options, and contingency arrangements for all data center systems.
• Support the engineering side of data center operations, including cost control, compliance with codes and regulations, people management, and staff development.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety rules, statutory obligations, environmental requirements, and energy-management practices.
• Prepare and present regular engineering reports while meeting SLA and KPI commitments.
• Share operating guidance, technical details, targets, and expectations with Amazon teams and critical facilities vendors.
• Provide hands-on facility support when needed, such as installing new equipment, removing decommissioned assets, replacing faulty equipment, and carrying out internal audits.
• Lead technical compliance audits and ensure corrective action plans are closed on time; participate in annual operational reviews focused on Amazon standards and regulatory requirements.
• Support the development and execution of energy and environmental management programs and stay updated on innovation in the data center industry.

Incident and Emergency Response

• Review incident reports, identify recurring themes, and share trend summaries along with recommended actions with management.
• Manage communication during incidents and provide timely status updates to leadership.
• Coordinate with vendors during emergency situations and, when required, travel to site to investigate and resolve issues directly.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure electrical, mechanical, and fire/life-safety systems remain within contractual and operational parameters.
• Oversee contractors, subcontractors, and vendors on site to make sure work follows approved methods, procedures, and local regulations.
• Set performance benchmarks, analyze facility operations, and prepare reports on infrastructure maintenance and performance.
• Partner with DCO managers, IT teams, and business stakeholders to plan projects, manage capacity, and improve safety, reliability, sustainability, and efficiency.
• Support rack installations and the delivery of power and cooling.

A Day in the Life

• Assist with troubleshooting facility-level and rack-level incidents within internal SLA commitments.
• Carry out rack installations, rack removal/decommissioning, and general facility operations support.
• Provide operational readings and KPI data to help maintain uptime targets.
• Manage on-site contractors, subcontractors, and vendors while ensuring adherence to established practices and legal requirements.
• Monitor maintenance and operations for all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life-safety equipment in the data center.

Qualifications

Basic requirements: A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline; at least 4 years of relevant experience in a data center or other critical environment; and practical use of Microsoft Office tools such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Preferred experience: 5 or more years in data center or mission-critical facilities such as hospitals, military sites, or public safety facilities; an operating engineering license such as DC II, DC III, or an equivalent credential; and experience supporting operations and on-call duties in data centers, mission-critical plants, or production facilities.
