Role overview

This opening is for a Trainee/Band 5/Band 6 Biomedical Scientist in the Clinical Biochemistry Department at Hull, which sits within the Scarborough, Hull and York Pathology Service. The post supports a busy diagnostic laboratory delivering high-quality, patient-focused services.

The department carries out scientific testing to help investigate disease and uses a modern set of analysers and specialist equipment. Core platform equipment includes a Beckman Coulter Automated Track, AU5800 chemistry analysers, DXI and Roche immunoassay analysers, along with specialist tools such as two mass spectrometers, ICP-MS and HM-JACKarc.

The laboratory is UKAS accredited and works to strong quality standards, with a clear focus on patient care and accurate, timely results.

Successful applicants who have already completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio will be appointed at the appropriate AfC Band 6 rate, if selected. Trainee Biomedical Scientists will start on Band 5 under Annex 21.

Key duties

• Process patient samples and run a range of diagnostic tests.
• Use internal quality control and external quality assurance samples to maintain result quality and turnaround times in line with SOPs and the departmental quality assurance policy.
• Keep specialist equipment operating effectively through routine upkeep, good laboratory housekeeping, fault finding and preventative maintenance.
• Carry out technical validation of patient results.
• Liaise clearly with clinicians, nurses and other service users about results and service-related updates.
• Work across the laboratory rota, including afternoons, evenings, weekends, nights and other shift patterns within a 24/7 service.

The post involves rotation through all sections of the laboratory and participation in a round-the-clock shift system. It is suited to an enthusiastic scientist who wants to contribute to a busy department delivering a strong, person-centred diagnostic service.
