Position Overview
The Senior Director, Membership reports directly to the Vice President of Corporate Strategy. This executive position entails close collaboration with Star Alliance leadership and senior stakeholders from member airlines to construct and uphold a membership framework that aligns with the alliance's strategic goals and consistently delivers value to members. The role demands a strategic leader with comprehensive airline industry expertise across commercial, operational, and technical domains, skilled in steering direction, prioritizing initiatives, and navigating complex multi-airline governance environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide alliance stakeholders in establishing strategic standards, core values, and managing the product portfolio in alignment with corporate objectives.
- Define and supervise frameworks for managing, assuring quality, and auditing Full Members, Connecting Partners, and Intermodal Partners.
- Lead integration and disengagement processes for new and departing members, ensuring strategic fit, governance rigor, and smooth implementation.
- Translate business aims and governance needs into explicit operational frameworks, clear processes, and defined accountabilities with member airlines.
- Chair and sponsor the Membership Liaison and Quality Committee to ensure effective governance, decisive outcomes, and accountability.
- Own the comprehensive roadmap for membership standards, core values, and products portfolio, managing prioritization, investment decisions, and maximizing value for members.
- Formulate and implement an encompassing product portfolio strategy aligning with Star Alliance's business priorities.
- Monitor financial effects, adoption rates, costs, and strategic value of the product portfolio through regular evaluations and recommend course corrections as needed.
- Lead the Principal, Membership by guiding quality management, compliance oversight, governance preparation, digital collaboration, and member engagement initiatives.
- Promote a culture of innovation, partnership, responsibility, and continuous enhancement within the membership and product teams.
- Collaborate with Customer Experience, Member Services Enablement, Digital & Technology, Corporate Planning & Business Intelligence, and Marketing to define priorities around product offerings, governance, reporting, and go-to-market strategies focused on member airline uptake.
- Communicate strategy, progress, risks, trade-offs, and expected returns on investments clearly to executives, stakeholders, and relevant member airline teams.
- Partner with the Corporate Planning & Business Intelligence Director to build dashboards that support ongoing product management, performance evaluation, governance, and decision-making.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of 10 years in product portfolio management, membership strategy, airline governance, quality management, or comparable leadership roles.
- Holds a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, aviation, economics, engineering, or similar; advanced degrees such as an MBA are advantageous.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with direct management responsibility for senior professionals and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Strong expertise in leading teams toward achieving financial, operational, and strategic objectives.
- Capable of motivating and aligning diverse cross-functional teams and senior airline stakeholders to shared goals.
- Possesses sharp strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, understanding how governance and product decisions drive value and ROI.
- Excellent communicator experienced in presenting complex strategies and decisions to executive audiences.
- Skilled in business case creation, product analysis, portfolio reviews, roadmap prioritization, and performance tracking.
- Thrives in a dynamic, fast-moving environment, adept at adjusting focus while maintaining strategic priorities.
