Policy Counsel

Position Overview

Everytown for Gun Safety, the nation's foremost advocacy group for preventing gun violence, is seeking a committed attorney to join its Policy team. This team leads efforts to reduce gun violence through improved gun laws and regulations across all 50 states and federally. The role involves strategic legal work within a collaborative multi-departmental team to develop and implement complex policy strategies in designated regions. Additionally, it requires building partnerships with state legislators, advocacy groups, lobbyists, and other stakeholders to facilitate the enactment and safeguarding of effective gun safety laws.

This role is based full-time in New York City or Washington, DC and reports directly to the Director of Policy Advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft and provide legal advice on firearm safety legislation at the state and local level.
• Analyze legislative texts, judicial opinions, and criminal court documents.
• Conduct research on Second Amendment jurisprudence and diverse gun laws nationwide.
• Contribute to the development of research reports and public materials.
• Collaborate with internal teams such as Government Affairs, Political, Research, Communications, and Digital to support ongoing initiatives.
• Review organizational communications, including reports, speeches, op-eds, emails, and social media content to ensure accuracy.
• Serve as the organization's representative in legislative hearings and public forums.

Qualifications

• Holder of a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) and active membership in a state bar.
• Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience.
• Proven ability to build strong working relationships across organizational divisions towards shared objectives.
• Exceptional research, writing, and editorial skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Capability to clearly explain complex legal concepts to non-specialist audiences.
• Strong professionalism complemented by flexibility, creativity, and a sense of humor.
• Competency in managing multiple projects within a dynamic, fast-paced setting delivering quality work on time.
• Willingness and readiness to travel occasionally, sometimes on short notice.
• Comfortable working in an open-plan office environment that can be fast-moving.
• Deep commitment to the mission of preventing and reducing gun violence.

Additional Information

The annual salary for this position ranges between $110,000 and $120,000. The organization provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, vision, dental coverage, paid time off, 401K matching, and education assistance.
