Job description

About the Role

As an Operational Support Grade at HMP Bullingdon, you will be crucial in facilitating the smooth daily operation of a busy prison. Your duties will encompass a range of activities including screening and searching at entry points, handling deliveries, supervising those visiting inmates, as well as overseeing phone communications and CCTV monitoring. This role involves both administrative responsibilities and physically active tasks such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles within the prison complex.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure security through gate searches and monitoring of prison deliveries and visitors.
  • Supervise telephone communications and provide vigilant CCTV surveillance.
  • Assist with movement of vehicles around the prison grounds as required.
  • Operate as part of a team covering various shifts, including nights and weekends, to maintain continuous operations.

Requirements and Eligibility

This position does not require formal qualifications. However, applicants must hold a valid full UK driving licence including D1 category, which permits the driving of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, maximum length of 8 meters, and trailers no heavier than 750kg. Own transportation and a driving licence are beneficial due to the rural location and limited public transport options. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, ability to remain calm under pressure, sound judgment, and a strong team orientation.

Terms and Conditions

  • Fixed shift start and end times requiring punctual attendance.
  • Annual leave of 25 days at the time of joining, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, plus 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
  • Opportunity to undertake a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Access to the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional Information

This role is ideal for those seeking to start a career in prison service with opportunities for internal progression including conversion schemes to become a Prison Officer. While contact with inmates is generally limited, occasional interaction depending on the prison’s operational requirements may occur. The job provides a unique opportunity to contribute to public safety and positively influence lives.
