- You will work 1 in 4 Saturdays.

About the SMR division
The SMR team is a newer and fast-expanding part of RAC. It is designed to provide arranged maintenance and repair services directly to members at places such as home driveways or workplace car parks. The work is scheduled in advance, so there are no emergency callouts, no recovery work and no unpredictable shift patterns.
Work location
You will be based in the Harlow cluster and cover Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford, Sawbridgeworth, Waltham Abbey, Epping and Hoddesdon. Your day will be organised around pre-booked appointments in your local area.
What the job involves
Your schedule will arrive digitally at the start of the day, and each appointment will already be booked with the member expecting you. The role combines technical work with member-facing communication and advice.
- Carry out routine vehicle servicing.
- Use advanced mobile diagnostic equipment to identify faults.
- Complete substantial repairs that would usually be done in a workshop.
- Explain findings to members and offer practical recommendations.
- Perform safety inspections in line with RAC standards.
- Work through organised jobs rather than reactive breakdowns.
Tools and support provided
From the outset, RAC supplies a fully equipped van, fuel card, uniform, complete tool set and advanced diagnostic equipment. The role is set up so you can focus on quality work with the backing of a structured schedule and parts support.
Why this role stands out
- Planned appointments instead of emergency roadside jobs.
- A steady flow of work rather than unpredictable demands.
- Repairs are deeper and more workshop-like, not temporary fixes.
- Enough time and support to complete jobs properly.
- Digital scheduling through RAC’s mobile service platform.
Candidate profile
This position suits technicians who want independence, variety and a structured working day without the pressure of reactive patrol work. The ideal person is confident with tools, comfortable speaking with members, and able to make sound decisions on the spot.
Requirements
- Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance, or an equivalent credential.
- At least 2 years’ experience as a vehicle technician working on light vehicles.
- Full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 penalty points.
Benefits and perks
- Competitive salary with the chance to earn more through overtime and bonuses.
- Optional guaranteed overtime after the first month.
- Free RAC Ultimate Complete Breakdown Service from day one.
- Car salary sacrifice scheme available after 12 months, including electric vehicle options.
- 23 days of holiday, increasing to 25 with service, plus bank holidays.
- Paid family leave, flexible scheduling and support for personal commitments.
- Pension contributions of up to 6.5% matched by RAC.
- Life assurance of up to 4x salary, with an optional 10x cover through flex benefits.
- 24/7 confidential support for you and household members aged 16 and over.
- Access to Orange Savings, the company discount portal.
- Colleague Share Scheme automatically available after probation.
