Overview
Based in Croydon or Canary Wharf, the Media Officer supports the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by advising senior managers and staff on media communication strategies, managing proactive and reactive media campaigns, and maintaining a politically restricted security clearance at least to Baseline Standard (BS). The role involves handling high-profile cases requiring prompt problem-solving within a fast-paced press environment. Interaction with operational, policy, stakeholder teams, senior management, as well as police force press offices, is a key part of the position. Participation in an out-of-hours duty rota is also required.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive media relations on IOPC investigations, including writing press releases, monitoring national and specialist media, correcting inaccuracies, and spearheading statements and briefings.
- Identify opportunities to proactively promote the IOPC's work and enhance its reputation.
- Coordinate interviews and prepare briefings for senior managers, oftentimes on short notice.
- Develop and execute media handling strategies for IOPC investigations, corporate reports, and policy areas in close collaboration with senior leadership.
- Work with Stakeholder Engagement teams to create integrated communication plans for sensitive or significant topics.
- Contribute to the strategic planning calendar and forward communications initiatives.
- Support the national media team and collaborate with regional colleagues to ensure consistency and accuracy of messaging.
- Engage with social media platforms daily to connect with diverse audiences as part of the IOPC’s social media strategy.
- Participate in the out-of-hours duty press officer rotation.
- Perform additional duties aligned with the level of responsibility as required.
Person Specification and Qualifications
- Proven experience in media relations within a busy press office, managing crisis situations and controversial topics, or comparable experience as a journalist in an active newsroom.
- In-depth knowledge of national and local media outlets, including digital and social media dynamics.
- Ability to sensitively manage emotionally challenging subjects within a press context.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and writing capabilities.
- Skilled in crafting content across various digital channels.
- Adept at simplifying complex information into clear, meaningful messaging.
- Experience advising senior managers effectively on media matters.
- Strong relationship-building skills with stakeholders including journalists.
- Team-oriented with a commitment to collaborative goals and fostering a supportive workplace.
- Customer and audience-focused approach.
- Excellent negotiation and influencing abilities.

Additional Information
The post is politically restricted and requires Baseline Standard security clearance. Candidates must successfully complete a criminal record check and baseline personnel security checks. The position is open to UK nationals, Irish nationals, eligible Commonwealth citizens, EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status, Turkish nationals with civil service work rights, and those with limited or indefinite leave to remain eligible for the EU Settlement Scheme.
