Role Overview

This role offers individuals who wish to volunteer with Hato Hone St John but prefer non-clinical engagement the chance to contribute meaningfully. As a member of the Major Incident Support Team (MIST), you will assist ambulance crews and communities in diverse situations, such as helping with patient transportation, setting up events like music festivals, or providing crucial support during emergencies and disasters at both local and national levels. Your contribution will ensure smooth ambulance operations behind the scenes, positively impacting your community.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all MIST vehicles and equipment are maintained and ready for operation
• Safely manage the relocation and use of support, command, or specialist vehicles
• Respond to major incidents and events by performing roles including logistics, welfare, communications, safety management, or team leadership

Training

All newly joined MIST members will undergo an initial foundation course covering an introduction to Hato Hone St John, principles of operational risk management, and driving training. These prepare members to confidently and safely handle vehicles and equipment in emergency contexts. Note that clinical training is not part of this role.

The position demands physical stamina due to the requirement to perform heavy lifting of specialized equipment.

Qualifications and Personal Attributes

• Possession of a current, full, clean New Zealand Class 1 Driver's Licence
• Level 2 First Aid Certificate, or willingness to acquire one during onboarding
• A commitment to attend at least one training session monthly to keep operational readiness
• Availability to deploy within 30 minutes after activation when indicated
• Ability to work well alone and collaboratively within a team
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail
• Maintain physical fitness suitable for the demands of the role
• Be at least 18 years old
