Position Overview

The Interior Designer for Design Development leads the phase of transforming approved interior concepts for commercial projects into detailed, coordinated, and buildable solutions. You will balance aesthetics, budget, functional needs, and constructability, ensuring designs meet high standards and transition smoothly to construction documentation. Autonomy, accountability, and technical excellence are essential as you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate closely with team members to ensure integrated project delivery.
Adhere to company design processes, templates, and presentation protocols.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Effectively communicate and present ideas to clients.
Build and maintain professional client relationships.
Lead development and refinement of interior design concepts progressing through to construction documentation and furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) stages.
Transform creative ideas into tangible deliverables including request for quotes (RFQ) and tracking of detailed custom finishes and lighting quotes.
Create coordinated design development drawings—space plans, elevations, sections, detailed assemblies, and narratives.
Define and manage finish palettes, materials, and lighting concepts aligned with brand standards and project objectives.
Assess design solutions for constructability, budget impacts, durability, and longevity.
Coordinate extensively with architectural and engineering consultants to ensure comprehensive design integration.
Proactively identify and resolve conflicts within design through technical reviews and communication.
Lead value engineering and optimize designs while maintaining original intent.
Prepare comprehensive design development packages that are accurate and construction documentation ready.

Professional Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a related field.
Minimum five years of experience in commercial interior design firms.
Experience with AutoCAD and SketchUp is required.
Extensive knowledge of materials, manufacturers, and commercial interior standards.
Understanding of commercial building codes, ADA compliance, and life safety relevant to Design Development.
Familiarity with Bluebeam, Google Workspace, Procore, and Adobe Creative Suite is desirable.
Experience in multi-family or hospitality sectors is a plus.
Detail-oriented with precision and accuracy.
Strong creative problem-solving abilities.

Physical Requirements

Able to stand, walk, or be on feet for extended periods during site visits.
Capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling 50–60 lbs as necessary.
Able to bend, stoop, reach, and perform light physical tasks on job sites.
Comfortable working in active construction environments with potential dust, noise, variable temperatures, and uneven surfaces.

Travel Requirements

Approximately 20-40 days yearly for onsite project visits, mostly in Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southwest U.S.
Additional 7-15 days for company events and conferences.
Residency within one hour of a major airport is required.
Willingness to travel by air for projects beyond three hours driving distance.
Valid driver's license with required auto insurance coverage.
Access to a reliable personal vehicle for travel and transporting project materials.
