Position Overview
The San Leandro Improvement Association (SLIA) is looking for a proactive and collaborative leader to serve as Executive Director. This key role leads a well-established nonprofit with an annual budget of $1 million, responsible for maintaining and expanding programs that support a clean, safe, and lively downtown San Leandro.
About the Organization
SLIA is a public benefit corporation managing the Downtown San Leandro Community Benefit District (CBD), providing public space maintenance, district identity enhancement, events coordination, and advocacy for local stakeholders. It partners closely with the City of San Leandro and manages contracts including supplemental safety services and the annual Cherry Festival.
Key Duties
- Oversee daily nonprofit operations including fiscal management, strategic planning, and marketing.
- Supervise a small staff team and manage the Ambassador Services Program through a contractor and on-site operations manager.
- Lead planning and execution of monthly community events, managing logistics, permits, budgets, vendors, volunteers, and sponsorships.
- Ensure meetings comply with open meetings laws and city regulations.
- Handle bookkeeping and financial reporting; pursue new revenue avenues such as grants and sponsorships.
- Advocate on behalf of district stakeholders and cultivate positive working relationships with city officials and partners.
- Build strong engagement with diverse community members, board members, funders, and partner organizations.
Required Skills & Experience
- At least 3 years in senior management with a successful track record managing projects.
- Experience working with nonprofit Boards of Directors.
- Adaptable, action-driven leadership with innovative community and business planning skills.
- Competence in developing funding sources including grants and sponsorships.
- Employee supervision and human resources knowledge.
- Excellent verbal and written communication with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficient with computers, email, document, and database management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of assessment district law, Proposition 218, and district management operations.
- Experience with organizational finance and accounting; familiarity with QuickBooks is advantageous.
- Familiarity with San Leandro community and downtown area.
- Proven ability to work effectively with culturally diverse populations.
- Additional language skills in Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, or Spanish are beneficial.
Work Environment
- Full-time, primarily onsite in San Leandro with some remote flexibility.
- Evening and weekend work required for events and presentations.
- Reports directly to a volunteer Board of Directors.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range from $95,000 to $135,000 based on experience.
- 3% Simple IRA contribution match.
- Paid time off accrued biweekly increasing over time; sick leave accrued biweekly.
- Observation of 10 paid company holidays annually.
