Opportunity Details

The Molecular Genetics Service, part of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Western General Hospital (NHS Lothian), is inviting applications for a Clinical Scientist Graduate Trainee. This fixed-term role (3 years) is offered on a part-time basis (or full-time if preferred) as a pre-registration band 6 post in Genomics (Molecular Genetics), with a salary between £43,231 and £52,679 pro-rated for part-time hours. The service will relocate to the Lauriston site in 2028 and operates within the Scottish Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine, delivering key molecular genetic testing across Scotland.

Role and Responsibilities

• Support molecular genetic testing and analysis within the laboratory including PCR, Sanger sequencing, and Next Generation Sequencing methodologies.
• Gain experience in advanced genetic techniques such as preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M), trio exome sequencing, and variant interpretation.
• Participate in assay quality control, troubleshooting, validation and verification of laboratory tests, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Engage with technical and clinical audit processes and contribute to quality management systems to maintain laboratory standards.
• Assist in the development and introduction of new testing services within the laboratory.

Candidate Profile and Qualification Requirements

• Applicants should hold at least a first or upper second-class BSc Honours degree or an equivalent international qualification in Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related relevant Medical Laboratory Science field.
• Experience in both research and clinical laboratory settings, ideally within molecular genetics laboratories, is highly desirable.
• Demonstrated interpersonal abilities and capability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team are essential.
• The candidate may possess preliminary experience with molecular genetics techniques and variant analysis but will be provided comprehensive training across the required laboratory and analytic methods.

Training and Career Development

The successful applicant will receive structured training and support to apply for Clinical Scientist registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, given appropriate prior qualifications and experience. Continuous professional development (CPD) is strongly encouraged and supported with an active CPD program to enhance laboratory and service provision skills.
