Job description

Overview

Freedom Professional Services invites applications for an experienced Clerk of Works to join its expanding electricity transmission and distribution civil design team. The position is permanent, full-time, and based in a hybrid model across York, Leeds, North Yorkshire, and Northeast England. Candidates will oversee construction compliance for a variety of electrical substation projects throughout Yorkshire and the Northeast, collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verify that all civil construction conducted by contractors adheres strictly to design specifications, relevant standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Support design engineers in managing and designing civil engineering components of various projects.
  • Utilize site surveys, existing plans, technical specifications, codes of practice, and manufacturer documentation to advise and assist civil engineering contractors during construction phases.
  • Assist in creating and reviewing site construction schedules, coordinating with contractors, designers, and project managers.
  • Participate in developing project Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and monitor contractor compliance.
  • Conduct quality, health & safety, and environmental audits as necessitated by the company and clients.
  • Prepare detailed weekly and monthly progress reports for clients.
  • Lead on-site coordination meetings on behalf of the client when required.
  • Maintain active liaison with clients and internal design teams to ensure efficient project delivery, provide updates, and identify risks impacting timelines, quality, or budget.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a Clerk of Works within civil or built environments involving construction of traditional masonry buildings, steel portal frames, and reinforced concrete foundations and structures.
  • Strong technical and interpersonal communication skills to collaborate effectively with contractors, colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Technical certification in Civil Engineering or relevant building construction qualification.
  • Membership or progress toward membership with the Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate of Great Britain.
  • Solid understanding of construction methodologies and associated risk management.
  • Registration with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) in an appropriate discipline.
  • Possession of a full UK driving license.

Desirable:

  • Capability to manage multiple technical projects simultaneously in a demanding environment.
  • Additional vocational training, diplomas, or certificates in construction-related disciplines.
  • Familiarity with Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging legislation.
  • Awareness of sustainability principles and environmentally responsible construction practices.
