About the Role

The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), located in Suitland, MD, invites qualified applicants for a full-time Biological Science Technician (Osteology) position within the Department of Anthropology's International Repatriation and Domestic Returns (IRDR) Program. The NMNH holds a vast collection of 148 million specimens, aiming to improve understanding of the natural world and human heritage. This role supports scientific and repatriation efforts by conducting detailed work on biological anthropology collections.

Key Responsibilities

• Examine, identify, and document human skeletal remains potentially subject to repatriation processes.
• Create biological profiles including estimations of age at death, sex, ancestry, and other relevant biological characteristics.
• Conduct technical research using available literature and comparative collections to assist in determining biological ancestry.
• Research museum archives, records, libraries, and other sources to gather historical and scientific data about collections.
• Organize, record, and enter information into computerized databases ensuring accurate permanent museum records.
• Assist and respond to inquiries from repatriation visitors and stakeholders related to biological anthropology collections and activities.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, osteology, biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, or related discipline from an accredited institution.
• Three to five years of relevant experience applying scientific methods and technical procedures in biological anthropology.
• Proficiency in osteological examination, classification techniques, and data documentation.
• Familiarity with museum record-keeping systems and data management to maintain accuracy and integrity of collection information.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with museum staff, researchers, descendant communities, and other stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple projects meticulously with a strong attention to detail.

Working Conditions

The role requires prolonged periods of standing while processing skeletal collections, frequent bending, reaching, and lifting items up to 40 pounds. Tasks involve the use of carts, ladders, and access equipment in museum storage areas. Work environment is primarily laboratory or collection-focused, with occasional fieldwork and potential exposure to some hazardous chemicals with necessary safety precautions.
