Overview
An Army General Service Recruit enlists to serve in the Defence Forces, undergoing a structured initial training program culminating in promotion to Private 2*. After recruit training, individuals gain multiple pathways to pursue various Corps careers.
Candidate Profile
- Motivated to work within a disciplined military setting.

- Resilience to operate under physically demanding and high-pressure conditions.
- Willingness to undertake overseas service assignments.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age between 18 and 39 years; proof of age required during selection phases.
- Minimum height requirement of 5ft 2in (157.48cm), verified during assessment.
- No visible tattoos above the collar while serving—ineligibility results if condition unmet.
- Must fulfill working permit requirements, including at least five years eligibility to reside in Ireland, substantiated via documentation.
- Successful completion of medical, physical, and security clearances conducted through recruitment procedures.
Training and Career Progression
- Initial basic recruit training lasts twelve weeks followed by a twelve-week advanced 3-star course.
- Completion enables options for specialized training courses tailored to the selected Corps.
- Training locations may be any Defence Forces site; post-training placement occurs within applicant’s chosen Brigade Unit (1 Brigade, 2 Brigade, or DFTC), subject to organisational needs.
- Encouragement to attend further courses post-qualification to specialize or enhance promotion prospects and eligibility for overseas deployment.
- Upon qualification, the role is as a three-star Private in one of various Service Corps including Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Transport, CIS, Engineers, Ordnance, Military Police, or Medical Corps.
Locations
Defence Forces barracks are located in Cork, Dublin, Donegal, Galway, Kildare, Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Meath, and Westmeath.
