This remote-first role is being hired through a partner company that handles the application review and all later hiring steps. The position is based in Germany and focuses on a fast-growing area sometimes described as machine visibility: understanding how AI systems, search crawlers, and autonomous agents behave across the modern web.

As the first research specialist dedicated to this space, you will create the research capability from scratch, working with a large-scale dataset on web crawling behavior. The job blends applied research, data science at scale, and strategic partnership with internal teams. Your work will help shape product direction as well as broader thinking in the technology ecosystem, and your published research will appear under your own name.

What you will do

Create and run the research foundation needed to structure, clean, and analyze very large datasets about web crawlers and machine interactions.
Develop original studies end to end, from framing the question and choosing the approach to statistical analysis and publication.
Design new data-gathering methods that extend what the team can study and open up fresh research questions about AI crawlers and machine visibility.
Study the activity of search bots, AI agents, and autonomous systems, and identify patterns across changing machine ecosystems.
Turn research into outputs such as concise data reports and more substantial flagship studies authored by you.
Work with cross-functional partners to convert research findings into practical input for product planning, business decisions, and market positioning.
Keep up with changes in AI search, web standards, structured data, and machine-readable technologies so future research stays relevant.
Use modern AI tools to speed up analysis, synthesis, experimentation, and day-to-day research work.

Experience and qualifications

Background in producing and publishing original research in academic or industry settings.
Advanced ability to analyze large datasets with SQL and Python.
Experience creating research infrastructure and data pipelines, not just working from ready-made datasets.
Strong command of experimental design, hypothesis testing, statistical analysis, and evidence-based research methods.
Track record of independently managing research work from idea stage through to publication.
Comfort using AI tools as part of research and analysis workflows.
Clear writing and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical readers.
Curiosity, analytical thinking, and the ability to work independently in a less structured research setting.
Experience with AI crawler behavior, technical SEO, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), information retrieval, or natural language processing is a strong plus.
Published papers, conference talks, or other recognized thought leadership in related areas are beneficial.
