Wastewater Laboratory Analyst

Overview

The Wastewater Laboratory Analyst role, based in Kings Mountain, NC, entails skilled technical work within the Water Resources Department. This full-time, non-exempt position involves analyzing wastewater treatment processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting plant operations for efficient wastewater management. The incumbent reports to the Wastewater Supervisor/ORC.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine and regulatory laboratory tests including pH, temperature, total residual chlorine, total suspended solids, conductivity, fecal coliform, biochemical oxygen demand, settleability testing, and ammonia nitrogen.
• Collect, preserve, transport, and analyze wastewater samples following standardized procedures and state laboratory requirements.
• Interpret lab results, prepare reports, and communicate findings to plant personnel and management to aid treatment adjustments and regulatory adherence.
• Collaborate with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality by submitting operational and compliance reports, addressing regulator queries, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge on environmental laws and permits.
• Perform quality control of laboratory procedures including equipment calibration, assurance checks, documentation, and corrective measures for reliable analytics.
• Maintain state certification standards through proficiency testing, documentation, and compliance with evolving regulations.
• Compile and accurately record lab data into electronic Discharge Monitoring Reports (eDMRs).
• Conduct regular plant inspections and tours to verify equipment functionality and identify operational issues.
• Serve as an on-call wastewater operator responding to alarms, emergencies, and operational demands as needed.
• Support waste water operators with maintenance tasks, equipment upkeep, grounds care, sampling, and general facility maintenance.
• Provide training and guidance on laboratory processes during staff absences.
• Manage laboratory inventories, including chemicals, reagents, supplies, and safety materials.
• Adhere to safety protocols, chemical handling, and all applicable wastewater regulations.
• Perform grease interceptor inspections supporting the Fats, Oils, and Grease Pretreatment Program.
• Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent education with coursework in environmental science, biology, chemistry, wastewater technology, or related fields.
• Willingness and ability to participate in rotating on-call shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.
• Preferred qualifications include meeting NCDEQ Laboratory Supervisor requirements via a 4-year degree with 6+ months lab experience, a 2-year degree with 2+ years lab experience, or 6 years of lab experience without a degree.
• Experience in municipal wastewater treatment facilities is advantageous.
• Familiarity with North Carolina Division of Water Resources wastewater reporting and electronic reporting systems (eDMR).
• Demonstrated knowledge of BOD, fecal coliform, ammonia nitrogen, and other regulatory wastewater testing methods.
• North Carolina Grade I Biological Water Pollution Control Operator Certification or ability to attain within 12 months.
• Valid North Carolina driver's license meeting municipal driver eligibility policies.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Work requires physical activities such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, ladder climbing, and manual dexterity.
• Employee may be exposed to outdoor elements, machinery noise, chemical substances, confined spaces, heights, fumes, and pathogens. Strict adherence to safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment is mandatory.
• Must be able to handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds and manage physical movement across the facility within a 12-hour shift.
• Ability to respond promptly to emergency call-outs and operational duties.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range is $19.40 to $24.25 per hour, equating to an annual range from approximately $40,359 to $50,449. Pay is determined based on qualifications, certifications, experience, responsibilities, and local government pay structures. Additional compensation may be provided for on-call, overtime, standby, and emergency responses.
