Job Overview

Join FNB South Africa as an Underwriter within the FR Life Assurance team, where innovation and adaptability are key. This role involves evaluating complex life insurance applications, assessing risks related to medical, occupational, avocational, travel, and financial aspects while strictly following underwriting guidelines.

Core Responsibilities

Conduct telephonic interviews and tele-underwriting assessments.
Handle underwriting cases including medical, occupational, part-time activities, travel, and financial risks for disability, critical illness, income protection, business cover, group risk, alterations, and queries.
Ensure that all cases are placed in accordance with reinsurance treaties and internal standards.
Collaborate with planners and Business Development Managers regarding special terms, inquiries, presales, and conduct underwriting refresher sessions for frontliners.
Address underwriting inquiries and prioritize urgent cases for resolution.
Participate in sessions led by the Chief Medical Officer and underwriting training presentations, including case studies and sales training.
Provide timely and effective resolution to medical underwriting questions and tasks, ensuring first-time resolution.
Complete all documentation accurately and in line with departmental protocols, utilizing IT systems proficiently.
Adhere to organizational best practices, policies, procedures, and comply with legislative requirements, taking corrective actions when needed.
Identify, mitigate, and escalate risks to the company appropriately.
Maintain extensive product knowledge to respond accurately to customer queries.
Stay updated on industry regulations, trends, and underwriting best practices.
Approve and countersign applications exceeding the underwriting acceptance limits.
Coach and mentor junior team members to enhance team performance and knowledge sharing.
Identify and pursue opportunities for process and procedure improvements.
Proactively identify problems and potential risks, managing or escalating them accordingly.
Review all applications denied by the online underwriting engine, including initial submissions, additional details, and policy changes.
Make balanced underwriting decisions based on appropriate evidence.

Candidate Profile

Minimum Grade 12 (Matric) qualification.
At least 5 years of relevant medical training or advanced medical underwriting experience.
Over 5 years of verified experience as a life insurance underwriter.
Strong knowledge of lump sum disability, critical illness, income protection, business cover, and group risk insurance products.
Familiarity with insurance products, regulations, underwriting guidelines, and current industry practices.
Proficiency with underwriting systems and tools.
Ability to interpret doctors' reports, medical results, and identify linked risk factors.
Experience assessing medical, financial, and occupational underwriting risks at an organizational level.
