Technician - Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics

Overview

Midlands State University invites applications for a Technician post within the Faculty of Science and Technology's Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. This role entails supporting the department's computing facilities, software environments, and research activities, contributing to the University's academic and community objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and maintain computer laboratories and technological equipment assigned to the department.
• Install, configure, and upkeep specialized statistical, mathematical, and actuarial software such as R, Python, MATLAB, Mathematica, and Maple.
• Provide technical support to faculty and students during lab sessions, research projects, and examinations.
• Maintain all laboratory equipment including computers, printers, networking devices, and audiovisual resources.
• Assist with procurement, inventory control, and maintenance of lab equipment and consumables.
• Support the setup and ongoing maintenance of departmental servers, databases, and online instructional platforms.
• Offer technical assistance during departmental events including seminars, workshops, and conferences.
• Keep detailed records regarding equipment status, software licenses, maintenance schedules, and lab usage logs.
• Undertake any additional duties assigned by the Department Chairperson.

Qualifications and Skills

• Possession of an Honours degree in Applied Mathematics and Computational Science, Applied Statistics, or a related field with at least a 2.1 classification from a recognized institution.
• Competency and experience in utilizing key mathematical and statistical software such as R, MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, and Maple.
