Customer satisfaction is paramount, so continuous improvement of service through coaching and feedback is essential. This role involves deep knowledge of store performance and hands-on leadership to implement practical improvements, while ensuring a safe environment for both staff and shoppers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the team to provide the simplest and most efficient shopping experience in the community.
  • Open and close the store, cover duties, and make decisions prioritizing customers, colleagues, and safety.
  • Act as the primary contact for colleagues on all operational matters in the Store Manager's absence.
  • Help organize seasonal, community, and charity events to create an inclusive store atmosphere.
  • Ensure the store is always clean, orderly, and visually appealing.
  • Prioritize replenishing products that matter most to customers.
  • Maintain accurate point of sale and shelf edge labeling to uphold quality standards.
  • Address and prevent overcharging incidents promptly.
  • Manage in-store queues proactively to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Coordinate colleague schedules and break times in line with trading patterns.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of store operations and guide teams in executing improvements.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety policies.
  • Communicate effectively with the entire team to keep everyone informed.
  • Identify operational simplifications and share suggestions with the Store Manager.
  • Keep customer needs central in all actions, resolving queries with a positive attitude.
  • Tailor service to individual customer requirements.
  • Recognize and celebrate excellent service by colleagues.
  • Identify obstacles to excellent service and work to eliminate them.
  • Resolve staff queries or escalate issues appropriately during Store Manager absence.
  • Manage adequate staffing, including covering short-notice absences and sickness.
  • Hold a Keyholder role, responding to alarm call outs to maintain store security.
  • Monitor internal communications to ensure prompt action and communication within the team.
  • Balance focus between customer service and stock replenishment.
  • Support the Store Manager in managing employee absences including conducting return-to-work interviews and addressing absence triggers per company policy.
  • Build strong working relationships with the Area Manager and People Partner, using their guidance and coaching as needed.
  • If the store includes a Post Office Local, oversee day-to-day post office operations and successfully complete required financial and criminal background checks.

Required Skills and Traits

  • Strong communication abilities
  • Customer-focused mindset
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Team collaboration
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Relevant technical proficiency
  • Effective time management
