Role Overview
The Project Engineer position focuses exclusively on the air cooler product line, coordinating technical aspects across multiple disciplines. Reporting directly to the Manager of Engineering, this role bridges front-end business units such as Sales, Estimating, Thermal, Mechanical and Structural Engineering, Project Engineering, and Project Management, with Quality and Manufacturing teams to deliver compliant and efficient air cooler systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze client contracts and specifications to develop summaries and detailed technical risk registers.
- Draft comprehensive engineering notes that supplement drawing packages with essential contract requirements.
- Establish consistent and repeatable Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) aligned with customer specifications and company quality standards.
- Determine required non-destructive examination (NDE) and quality control processes as dictated by codes and client guidelines.
- Review ITPs, 3D models, drawings, and a range of technical calculations, participating in squad review sessions prior to client submissions.
- Serve as the technical authority for Project Managers during internal and client kick-off meetings, preparing clarifications and responding to queries.
- Assist in root cause analyses when quality issues arise, contribute to standard operating procedures, support field service activities, and manage provincial and national equipment registrations.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil-Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five years’ experience in industrial manufacturing involving air cooler structures, process equipment, heat exchangers, and associated piping.
- Solid understanding of relevant standards including API-661, API-660, TEMA, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel codes, as well as structural codes CISC, AISC, NBC, CSA, and NACE when applicable.
- Experience with steel structure fabrication, heat transfer, pressure testing, radiographic weld inspection, quality assurance/control, and NDE procedures on materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and exotic alloys.
- Exposure to multiple technical areas including steel structure design and detailing, motors, actuators, vibration and temperature instrumentation, and electrical components involved in air coolers.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage several deadlines, work autonomously and collaboratively within a team.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for local and Alberta site visits.
Work Environment and Additional Details
This position primarily operates in an office environment complemented by frequent presence in a large industrial fabrication shop that requires personal protective equipment (PPE). The work involves regular physical activity including standing, walking, stair climbing, and bending. Travel to job sites and subcontractor locations is expected as project needs dictate, including potential international trips.
