About the role
HM Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Wayland. This is a demanding, varied role in a fast-moving environment where no two days are the same. The post offers a salary of £33,746 to £38,003.
Prison officers play a key part in protecting the public while helping individuals in custody move toward more positive lives. With the right integrity, resilience and communication skills, this role can open the door to a rewarding long-term career with room to progress and specialise.
Who this role suits
There is no single background for a prison officer. People who have worked in areas such as parenting, teaching, retail or the armed forces may already have developed the empathy, confidence and communication style needed for the job. What matters most is the ability to build constructive, professional relationships with offenders, including those who may be at a very low point in their lives.
Strong teamwork is essential. You will be expected to work closely with colleagues and act as part of one coordinated team to help keep the prison, prisoners and staff safe.
What the work involves
This position is varied and you may take on different responsibilities within the same day. At different moments you may need to act as a peacekeeper, supporter, advisor or educator while working directly with prisoners in a secure setting.
Working pattern
You must be willing to work a range of shifts, including weekends.
Training, development and benefits
The role comes with comprehensive training, along with opportunities to advance and specialise in different areas over time. In addition to the salary, the package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and access to the Cycle to Work scheme.
Beyond the benefits, the role also offers the personal satisfaction of helping someone get back on track and supporting meaningful change.
