Position details

This student role is based at Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. Working hours vary up to a maximum of 36.25 hours per week, and the schedule may include weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. The assignment runs from May 4 to September 7, 2026. The pay rate is $18.45 per hour.

What you will do

• Represent one of Kingston’s best-known tourism attractions and serve as a public face of the site.
• Portray a British soldier from 1867 British North America.
• In period costume, present the history of Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada to visitors through drill manoeuvres, guided tours in both English and French, and historical reenactments, events, parades, and performances.
• Take part in the Fort Henry Guard Drill Squad’s daily training, including foot and arms drill, formation drill, firearms demonstrations, artillery gun drill, and military etiquette.
• Care for personal uniforms, historical weapons, and equipment by polishing and cleaning them regularly.
• Perform for visitors and support both internal and external special events.
• Help make each visit engaging and memorable by delivering strong customer service.
• Follow safe work practices at all times and report hazards to a supervisor right away.
• Support equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in all interactions with staff and guests.

Qualifications and skills

The role calls for strong physical stamina, the ability to learn and perform highly coordinated military drill quickly, and the confidence to work effectively in a fast-paced live-performance team environment. You should be comfortable handling pressure and meeting high standards of performance.

You must also be able to learn and explain Canadian and/or British military and social history around 1867 within a short timeline, both individually and in group settings. The position requires the ability to present as a historical character in costume, along with strong communication, interpersonal, and audience-service skills.

Fluency in both English and French is required. You also need the ability to learn and follow safety protocols so the well-being of yourself, visitors, and co-workers is maintained.

Applicants must be at least 17 years old, as required by the Explosives Regulatory Division. A vulnerable sector check is required for this position.
