Job description

Overview

UPMC Whitfield Hospital in Waterford is seeking a dedicated Medical Registrar to deliver comprehensive medical care to patients admitted through the Medical Admissions Unit as well as other patients needing medical assessments. This role involves collaboration with Consultant Physicians and other healthcare staff to ensure quality patient management from admission to discharge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical consultation for surgical patients when required.
  • Manage patient care throughout their hospital stay under consultant supervision.
  • Admit patients to the Medical Floor and attend daily ward rounds with the medical team.
  • Ensure smooth continuity of care by taking patient handovers and documenting clinical notes accurately and promptly.
  • Participate in family meetings and respond to adverse patient incidents such as injuries or sudden illnesses.
  • Contribute actively to quality improvement, risk management, and policy development initiatives within the Internal Medicine Service.
  • Assist in educating colleagues and staff, and engage in hospital projects.
  • Adhere strictly to hospital policies, health and safety regulations, and promote a professional work environment that enhances patient care and hospital reputation.
  • Lead clinical emergency responses including Code Blue calls, administer treatments such as IV drugs, cannulation, venepuncture, catheterisation, ECGs, and supervise nursing staff during emergencies.
  • Participate in patient discharge processes, ensuring detailed summaries are prepared and approved by Consultants for communication with GPs and insurers.
  • Engage in continuing professional development, including mandatory training, clinical audits, and hospital-wide educational events.
  • Work collaboratively towards accreditation standards like JCI, CHKS, and HIQA, and contribute to auditing and quality improvement programmes.
  • Support insurance claim management by providing relevant medical information and assist administrative teams as needed.

Medication Management

  • Comply fully with Medication Management Policies.
  • Verify and reconcile patients' medication histories accurately on admission.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Full registration with the Medical Council of Ireland.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Preferred qualification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or willingness to obtain it.
  • Proven experience as a Registrar in an acute hospital setting.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Strong diagnostic and surgical skills relevant to the role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
