Job description

Role Overview

The Health and Amenity Officer is responsible for conducting proactive patrols within the City of Greater Geelong municipality, engaging with community members to address complaints and resolve local disputes. This position involves working collaboratively with the Health & Amenity Team to enforce and investigate breaches of local laws concerning issues such as littering, unsightly properties, overhanging vegetation, illegal dumping, noise disturbances, and unauthorized camping on council land.

Key Duties

  • Establish constructive communication with residents and visitors to promote awareness and compliance with relevant statutes, legislation, and local laws.
  • Assist in administering compliance activities under applicable legislation, Acts, Regulations, and Local Laws.
  • Investigate complaints related to nuisances covered by the Public Health and Wellbeing Act.
  • Support legal case preparations by compiling necessary documentation regarding breaches of local laws.
  • Monitor and enforce regulations pertaining to health and amenity matters including camping, littering, noise control, and footpath trading.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a Local Laws Officer capacity or a similar role requiring strong understanding of legislation and regulations. They should be motivated, team-focused, and able to communicate confidently with the public. Proactivity, strong interpersonal skills, and a willingness to learn and innovate are essential.

  • Capability to interpret and apply legislation, and clarify these to colleagues, the community, and courts when necessary.
  • Effective communication skills for investigating potential statutory breaches related to nuisances under relevant health legislation.
  • Strong decision-making and explanation skills to convey enforcement actions clearly.
  • Qualifications or experience in statutory compliance or related tertiary fields.
  • Possession of a Certificate IV in Local Government & Regulations is highly regarded.
  • Must hold a Working with Children Check and consent to National Police and pre-employment medical assessments, all facilitated and funded by the employing authority.

Additional Information

Positions: Multiple permanent full-time opportunities.

Classification & Salary: Band 5 with annual remuneration of $83,436 plus superannuation.

Work Environment: Onsite within Geelong municipality.
