Job description

Overview

The Head of the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) holds the pivotal responsibility for overseeing and ensuring efficient operations throughout the CSSD. This role involves designing, implementing, and maintaining policies aligned with high standards of sterilization and infection control consistent with hospital excellence benchmarks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, guide, and lead CSSD activities while collaborating with other departments to ensure seamless patient care and management.
  • Develop, advise, and recommend cutting-edge policies and procedures for approval by medical leadership, focusing on best practices in sterilization.
  • Ensure strict adherence to departmental policies, safety protocols, and legal regulations.
  • Establish and govern a robust departmental framework for efficient governance.
  • Supervise daily sterilization processes guaranteeing safety for patients and staff.
  • Coordinate with directors and medical leaders to identify and fulfill CSSD needs.
  • Manage uninterrupted supply chains of sterilized medical instruments throughout the hospital.
  • Conduct regular audits across multiple departments to verify compliance with CSSD standards.
  • Investigate recall incidents and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Oversee maintenance, calibration, and service contracts of CSSD instruments and equipment, coordinating with Biomedical Engineering to ensure operational readiness.
  • Validate CSSD process documentation and promptly address any discrepancies.
  • Resolve customer complaints and internal issues efficiently and tactfully.
  • Analyze feedback from user departments monthly, enacting corrective actions as needed.
  • Mediate any interdepartmental conflicts to maintain smooth CSSD functioning.
  • Engage in additional responsibilities assigned by hospital management.
  • Plan and manage CSSD services for new clinical pathways and specialties as required.
  • Participate actively in hospital health programs, outreach initiatives, and community injury and illness prevention efforts.
  • Ensure departmental quality indicators meet or exceed defined benchmarks and continually enhance sterilization quality outcomes.
  • Lead the hospital’s quality improvement programs and maintain compliance with international standards such as JCI and NABH.
  • Manage budgeting and financial planning related to CSSD equipment, instruments, consumables, and supplies, optimizing operating costs.
  • Support human resources in recruiting qualified team members, setting performance goals, conducting appraisals, and driving high professional standards.
  • Ensure comprehensive induction and skills training for all team members, develop successors, and mentor deputies aligned with organizational growth.
  • Stay updated on advancements in CSSD technology, processes, and systems to foster continuous improvement.
  • Provide ongoing education regarding infection control and safety protocols for CSSD staff.
  • Lead and participate in research projects that enhance departmental and hospital capabilities.

Required Competencies

Eligibility

Applicants must have a Bachelor of Hospital Management (BHM), Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) in Hospital Management, or a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Hospital Management.
