Role overview

Coffey is looking for a skilled Estimator to strengthen its tendering team in Mansfield. In this position, you will take ownership of preparing tender estimates for civil engineering and mechanical & electrical engineering projects. What you'll do

  • Take an independent, self-motivated approach and keep building technical expertise over time.
  • Bring a constructive attitude and be ready to handle new and varied challenges.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Tendering Department, wider Group teams, and outside consultants to prepare bids effectively.
  • Act as Lead Estimator where assigned and manage the full tender submission process, including tender design coordination when needed.
  • Make sure tender price checks are completed in line with company procedures.
  • Source quotations for materials and subcontract work, with support from Assistant Estimators, and build up costs for direct labour, staff, and plant.
  • Contribute project-specific content for quality-related submission documents.
  • Prepare tender programmes, working alongside delivery managers where required.
  • Identify major risks and opportunities within tenders and reflect them in the overall pricing assessment.
  • Assist with post-tender reviews and the handover of successful bids.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work assigned to Assistant Estimators.
  • Keep up to date with the statutory rules that apply to the company’s operations.
  • Stay familiar with the standard contract forms used on Group projects and understand the effect of any amendments to those forms.
  • Maintain awareness of the Group’s Safety Statement and HSQE Management Systems.
  • Ensure all tenders allow for safe working methods and welfare facilities in line with legal requirements and good practice.

Experience and qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant construction subject, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the construction industry, ideally in civils and/or mechanical & electrical work.
  • Good understanding of the commercial side of construction contracts, gained through comparable project experience.
  • Strong ability to organise, prioritise, and manage work to tight deadlines.

Desirable background

  • Professional membership, or active progress toward membership, with RICS, CIOB, or an equivalent body.
