Children's Ground is a First Nations-led organisation dedicated to systemic reform ensuring dignity, justice, and equity for children and their families. Our holistic approach emphasizes First Nations knowledge systems and practices, focusing on developmental and wellbeing support spanning from pre-birth through young adulthood. Operating primarily in Central Australia and the Top End, we are supported by a Melbourne-based Shared Services team.

Role Overview

The Environmental Health Coordinator role serves five communities around Mparntwe (Alice Springs), working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to promote environmental health under the Family Health and Wellbeing Framework “Health in the Hands of the People.” This position involves leadership over two Orange Sky Laundry trucks, overseeing scheduling, community engagement, staff supervision, and facilitating access to cleaning resources that support housing maintenance and tenancy security.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement the Children’s Ground Family Health Model focused on improving health and wellbeing outcomes.
• Collaborate with communities to identify, assess, and respond to environmental health needs promoting wellbeing for First Nations people.
• Ensure environmental health services are accessible to all First Nations individuals within the supported communities.
• Deliver health and wellbeing information in local languages and uphold cultural knowledge and practices.
• Coordinate with the Learning and Wellbeing Team to incorporate health initiatives into ongoing educational programs.
• Manage deployment and operation of Orange Sky laundry trucks and environmental health trailers Monday through Friday.
• Supervise and support local community members managing laundry and environmental health equipment, fostering tenant empowerment.
• Develop and roll out community-prioritized environmental health promotion projects such as laundry services, house and yard cleans.
• Maintain respectful engagement with local First Nations families to guide direction and responsibilities.
• Assist families in maintaining tenancies by providing relevant information and support services.
• Provide mentorship, leadership, and professional development guidance to team members.
• Contribute to program design, ensuring alignment with evidence-based environmental health practices.
• Organize team schedules, responsibilities, and practice standards effectively.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation, policies, and compliance standards ensuring quality service delivery and data security.
• Conduct assessments and research in partnership with communities and research teams.
• Assist staff with data collection and reporting for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
• Adhere to organisational philosophies, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in Environmental Health promotion or closely related fields.
• Proven expertise and success in health promotion activities.
• Experience working with First Nations communities and appreciation of their cultural contexts.
• Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written.
• Strong leadership capabilities with teamwork, facilitation, and supervisory skills.
• Current driver's licence required.
• Willingness to undergo National Police Check and obtain OCHRE Working with Children Check.
