Discipline Lead - Ecology

Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned ecology professional to lead and inspire our ecology team, driving strategic initiatives and contributing to impactful environmental projects across New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific. This leadership role involves guiding technical efforts, fostering collaboration within a multidisciplinary environment, and advancing sustainable outcomes for communities and natural ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

• Mentor and develop the ecology team to enhance their skills and foster a culture of high performance and collaboration.
• Oversee the lifecycle of complex ecological projects from initial proposals to successful delivery, ensuring technical excellence.
• Provide strategic guidance, quality control, and peer reviews of ecological work, including impact assessments and management plans.
• Prepare and critically evaluate ecological impact assessments, technical reports, and management strategies.
• Establish and maintain robust relationships with clients, indigenous stakeholders (mana whenua), regulatory authorities, and other relevant parties.
• Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams including planners, engineers, environmental scientists, and digital specialists to create integrated solutions.

Candidate Profile

• Possession of a degree in Ecology or closely related field.
• Proven experience leading complex ecological projects along with demonstrated skills in technical leadership and team development within terrestrial or freshwater ecology contexts.
• Strong ability to draft and review ecological assessments supported by sound knowledge of New Zealand's environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• Established professional network with a record of business development and ability to grow ecological services.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of mentoring and managing stakeholder engagement effectively.
• Certification as an Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP) Ecology Specialist or actively pursuing this credential.
• Experience with council hearings, Environment Court, or Boards of Enquiry is considered beneficial.
• Legal eligibility to work in New Zealand and possession of a valid driver’s license are mandatory.
