About Velsera
Velsera develops software that transforms complex biological datasets into actionable research insights and clinical solutions. Their platforms integrate multi-omic and multi-modal data—including genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, imaging, clinical, and real-world data—supporting major biomedical initiatives worldwide. Their customers include pharmaceutical firms, biotech companies, public research organizations, and diagnostic labs committed to advancing precision medicine.
Role Overview
As Director of Product Design, you will serve as the design authority for the Seven Bridges Platform and lead the design function at Velsera during a period of rebuilding how design operates—validating and shipping products rapidly. Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy and Product Officer, you will influence both strategic and hands-on design decisions, helping product managers turn ideas into prototypes quickly using AI tools, and overseeing design standards, tokens, and component libraries.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and refine user journeys, workflows, and interaction designs in partnership with product managers, ensuring seamless experiences from high-level structure to detailed interaction states.
- Develop and maintain the design system from the ground up, including design tokens, component libraries aligned with front-end code, and unified visual standards used by the entire organization.
- Ensure rapid prototyping processes remain efficient and reliable by reviewing prototype quality before customer exposure and advancing validated concepts to production design.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the capabilities of the product designer focused on clinical products; recruit and grow the design team as the company scales.
- Design AI-integrated product experiences emphasizing trust, transparency, and coordinated human-machine workflows, including assistant and copilot features and verifiable AI-generated results.
- Collaborate closely with front-end engineers to embed the design system into working code rather than merely design tools like Figma.
- Utilize product analytics to identify user pain points and experience debt, providing leadership with prioritized improvement plans.
- Contribute design expertise to leadership strategy discussions.
Requirements
- At least seven years of experience in product design with senior responsibility for user journeys in complex, data-intensive, or scientific software products.
- Proven experience building and sustaining a design system adopted by engineering teams.
- Track record of formally managing and improving designers who value your leadership.
- Ability to make significant impact through systems used company-wide, beyond individual screens.
- Comfort with fast-paced, ambiguous environments and eagerness to embrace such challenges.
- Practical experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude) for design, prototyping, and software production, with informed views on their advantages and limitations.
- Familiarity with designing AI-enhanced product features, focusing on user trust, oversight, and transparency.
- Expert-level proficiency in Figma, including working with variables and design-to-code workflows like Code Connect.
- Strong understanding of front-end development constraints to effectively collaborate with engineers (coding not required).
- Ability to serve as the senior design voice within the company, working with executives, engineers, and scientists with clarity, generosity, and comfort in ambiguity.
- Preferred qualifications include experience with genomics, multi-omics, imaging, clinical or regulated life sciences data products; managing products across multiple environments; familiarity with component documentation tools such as Storybook; and experience establishing design functions in engineering-led organizations.
