Role Overview

Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) is hiring a full-time Director of Athletics for its Athletics Department in Utica, New York. This is a 12-month position focused on strategic leadership, program administration, and support of student-athlete success in line with the College’s mission of accessible, high-quality education.

Working alongside the Dean of Athletics & Recreation, the Director will help shape athletic programs through planning, collaboration, supervision, compliance oversight, and campus-wide engagement.

What You'll Do

  • Lead, supervise, assess, and support athletics staff, including coaches, and take part in recruiting and hiring activities.
  • Help ensure the department stays aligned with NJCAA rules and performance standards.
  • Partner with the Dean to create the athletic event and practice calendar, including dates, times, and venues.
  • Support annual improvement plans aimed at strengthening programs and services.
  • Encourage continuous learning and professional growth among department staff.
  • Assist coaching staff with outreach and recruitment efforts at colleges and high schools when needed.
  • Work with other college departments to promote student-athlete achievement.
  • Collaborate with the Dean on preparing program budgets.
  • Assist in purchasing equipment and supplies while staying within budget limits.
  • Contribute to the Athletics Department Strategic Plan and help carry out its priorities.
  • Support college-wide activities such as commencements, open houses, and orientations, and help coordinate athletic events.
  • Partner with Institutional Advancement on fundraising initiatives for athletics.
  • Help promote athletic offerings through community outreach, social media, recruiting efforts, event publicity, and coordination with marketing and communications teams.
  • Carry out additional duties assigned by the Dean.

Schedule and Work Expectations

The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed. The standard workweek is 35 hours.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in sports management, physical education, higher education, or a closely related discipline.
  • Background in collegiate athletics administration, coaching, teaching, or a similar leadership position.
  • Strong commitment to upholding strong academic standards for student-athletes.
  • Ability to oversee coaches across multiple responsibilities and changing situations.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and travel when required.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree.
  • Prior experience with NJCAA operations.
  • Experience managing athletic facilities.
  • Experience handling budgets.
